Does anyone have one of these? I need a filter for my RB and was looking at intakes. A metal mesh filter seems like the best way to go, but damn, $200 for a filter and adapter is a bit steep. Are these worth the money, or would I be just as well off going with an ~$80 A'PEXi or HKS intake filter? Or maybe even one of those "Blitz-style" metal mesh intakes you see on Ebay going for $5.99 and no reserve? ;)

ummm...there will only be a 1-2HP difference between a Autozone cone filter and an $80 Apexi Power Intake. I would rather use that $50 saved towards something else instead.

I think I'm gonna go with one of those $5.99 Ebay special "Blitz-style" metal mesh filters then. If it's made out of the same sh*t as Blitz filters, and it's the same shape, it can't be that much different....

oh man, dont use the metal filters. they flow great, but they dont actually filter the trash out of the air.

Hmmm, any suggestions? Should I just go with a K&N or something?

K&N and Apex-i filter the best. the apex filter is actually better than the k&n when it comes to filtering, but the k&n is cheaper and more available.

I just used a JWT popcharger made for the 300ZX on my RB20...works great so far. And as for using a cheap auto parts store filter...I had one on a while back and the car would sputter > 6000 rpm. I swapped to the JWT filter and all is better.

get a cheap metal cone filter (ebay one i guess) and spray that with some K&N cone filter charger stuff and u will be good to go. It will breath easy AND filter air good.

You mean the filtercharger oil that is supposedly designed to stay suspended in the fabric of the K&N filter? Will that stuff really stay on a metal filter if I spray it on? I'm skeptical...

There was a thread on this just a few weeks ago! Can't remember if it was here or on FA, but the thread had a link to a Japanese performance mag that tested all of the major intakes. They tested Apex'i, HKS, Blitz, and K&N for flow and filtering effectiveness.

They all flowed very, very close (within 3 hp) on a ~350 hp car (Supra, iirc). I can't remember, but either HKS or Blitz was the worst on flow.

What I do remember is that Apexi was the best. K&N was close, but Apexi ruled on both filtering and flow.

And it's ~$100 on ebay.

[EDIT] so yeah, ditto to what IvoryJ30 was saying. Only I can't remember ever seeing a K&N that included a venturi-shaped adapter. The filters are like $45 tho, if you can find an adapter.

Just use the good ol' K&N they're cheap, flow well, and are excellent filters. Just cause something says HKS on it doesn't mean it works any better, just that its more expensive.

i agree 100%

and my choice is the K&N. just because its commonly available, and i have always used K&N and none other.

So yeah, all four brands flow about the same, but only the Apexi and K&N actually do any filtering.

DO NOT LISTEN TO THAT FOOLISH BS ABOUT SPRAYING DOWN A METAL MESH FILTER ELEMENT WITH OIL. Oil is designed for an element that can absorb it, like the cotton gauze in K&N. Without cotton or foam, you might as well just spray it right into your throttle body. Yes, the best in hp gain and filtering was the A'pexi Power intake. Unfortunately, it is dry element and unreplaceable, so you'll have to pop another $130 when it eventuallt gets really really dirty. I chose the Blitz LM. It is a similar design doesn't have a visible conical top but it has something like it, and the element is replaceable. Although I have yet to find the replacement for sale anywhere

The first time I used a K&N was on my 1987 Starion. I haven't used any other airfilter ever since. The one on my SR20 works great. I need to clean it though, it's more black than K&N pink at his point.
