I'm thinking of putting a blind spot detection either ultrasonic or laser, most likely ultrasonic, on the car (I HATE constantly looking over my shoulders, even worse when I happen to be wearing a hood). My plan is to mount it 1-2cm from the edge in the rear wheel well and run a line to an led that I'll place on the inside by the side mirrors, and another line to the signal so they only activate when I signal. I might even put a light audio tone with the led w/ a switch to mute...not too sure about that one though.

Any thoughts, advice?

You might need to look at the fsm for the nissan fuga. The models over there starting in 06 have the blindspot indicator.
