alright guys, due to my limited income, i cannot go with the sr20det swap as most of you would suggest, so what do you guys think i should do? Rebuild my motor, or just swap in another ka24e? How much should i expect to pay for another ka...

i've seen some motors on 240sx.org for 2-4 hun. depending on mileage etc. what happened to yours? too far gone to consider rebuild?

200-400 isnt bad for the motor, as a complete rebuild kit would be about that. And the only substitution for an SR that might appease you on a KA is higher compression pistons, but those would be much more expensive (about $130 a piston, plus about 4 weeks down time). You live in CA, so check out places that swap KAs for SRs and see how much they are letting the 'swapped' KA motors go for, might be pretty cheap! Good luck!

I'd say pull a loan from someone, say about 2gs and you should have your SR. Trust me I've seen SRs go for about 1250 SHIPPED!

SRs for 1250 are just that...you'll be waiting around a lot longer for some missing parts.

You can get a comeplete KA24DE changeover, as was stated for about 400 or so. Plus if your pistons didn't go through the block, or are melted or whatever, you can put them in the DE, and get a nice bump in power (plus you'll have a DE in there, which will also be a bump in power). I'd say buy a junkyard motorset, and a rebuild kit, then you are as good as new.

I'm going through the same thing right now- Didnt have enough for an SR but i found a newly rebuilt ka24e for 700 with trans and pretty much everything new. The transmission was an auto so needless to say its sitting in my side yard, along with alot of other crap. Bought it three weeks ago, just got it running yesterday. If i totalled up all the money ive spent for miscellaneous things its probably right about 1000 (had to buy new injectors, as mine were melted in a fire). So for another grand (+ or - 300 bucks or so) you could have an sr20. The only reason i didnt do that is because my s13 is gonna be my beater for when i can afford an sr and and s14. Good luck with whatever you choose.

I'm selling a 1995 KA24de motor with 100k, as I'm getting my SR swap done in January, so it'll be available then.

I'm selling it for 300.00 including ecu.

Email me at [email protected] if you're interested.

I have two sohc blocks sittign in my friends garage waiting to be rebuild, i got them for free, so it's not like I got money....a fact underlined by another fact which states that I won't have money to rebuild anything until july.

???

$130 a piston? Why not just get the KA24E pistons, and increase your compression to 11.5:1 for $40 a piston?

Nick.

what if u already have ka24e engine, what do u do then, hmm? How do you make ur compresion lower through pistons? cuz it already has flat tops...what do i do, shave them or something?

I was speaking specifically of the SOHC. Putting SOHC pistons into a DOHC will get you 11.1:1 or 11.6:1 compression ratio. The only way to increase compression on the SOHC is getting custom forged pistons. Nissan Motorsports sells these same pistons for $150 each.

when one turboes the engine, one wanst lower commpressio though, right? so when u get higgher comrpession pistions, u cannot boost as much...what to do?

You will want some forged pistons to make your CR lower. I believe 8.5:1 or 8.2:1 is desired for turbo. I have a SCC from 1995 with a turboed 1992 DOHC with 8.2:1 compression pistons. You will want to talk to someone at JE for exact details to get your CR just right. Again, forged will be better than stock, since they will be a better alloy than alluminum to withstand the heat and pressure of turbo.

8.4 to 8.6 is the desired compression for a turbo...go any lower and you have chances of losing power. If I were you , I would buy a Ka42de. Then Rebuild it once you get the extra money if you are handy with engines. If your going to get someone else to pull the motor twice, I would recomened buying the stuff all together.

so can i put sohc pistons in my s13 sr for better compression ratio, and what would the power gains be?

Let me clarify:

If you have a KA24DE DOHC S13 or S14, you can:

- Put 1989 9.1:1 SOHC pistons in and you will get a 11.6:1 compression ratio- Put 1990 8.6:1 SOHC pistons in and you will get a 11.1:1 compression ratio

You can, of course, put 1989 9.1:1 pistons into a 1990 SOHC and get the 9.1:1 compression ratio. But that wont be much of a difference at all. Nissan lowered the CR from 89 to 90 to help improve drivability.

As far as power gains, i honestly do not know. With 10.5:1 pistons in my SOHC (hopefully completed in the next week or two), i should hope, with all my other mods, to achieve something in the 180 RWHP range. But i am sure this is extremely optomistic.

And no, KA pistons WILL NOT FIT into a SR20DE(T). Completely different altogether. JUN (among many others) makes custom forged pistons for the SR, as well as stroker kits and all sorts of expensive goodies for more SR power. Also check out HKS.
