Ugh. The bits where he has to climb out around stuff with no ladder are by far the worst. Like at 3:11 and 4:00. Especially 4 minutes. You can see him trying to find the best grip arrangement to get up there. Imagine being 1700 feet off the ground and being unsure of your grip! He just keeps going. I don't think I could at that point. At the very least I'd have to use a safety line for that part.

I love the thrill of crazy heights, but that is brown-trousers time.

if the pay is right, sign me up. I climbed telephone poles for the past 7 years (I know its not the same AT ALL) But, at least from that height you know that you will die if you fall. None of that "I could survive" crap that I had to deal with.

I watched someone do this one time, it is amazing. They just disappear at one point. Also, it has to take a decent amount of stamina to climb that high.(that is where I think that I would fail)

WOW. You couldn't pay me any amount of money to climb up there. At least give those guys a parachute so they have some chance of surviving if they fall :ohno:

Seems to me it would be easier (and safer)to drop them down by helicopter.I know one thing, there is no amount of money you could pay me to do that job!

Lots of new problems introduced by helicopter, one being static discharge. The lift rotors generate a LOT of static. When lowering a person onto a grounded object, the static discharge can be dangerous to the person being dropped off. It's bad enough that it could possibly kill, and likely knock the person out...the latter being as good as dead for anyone dropping onto a transmission line anyway. And that's a really tiny target to hit. You'd need one Hell of a pilot to pull that off.

When the sound of lightning/thunder hit I about peed.

If I was climbing that high you'd need a crobar to pry my pants out of my crack.

I actually applied for a job in my area doing something like this, granted they weren't 1800 feet up, but 1200 is pretty high up too, never got called in for an interview. I didn't hear any mention of wind in that video, which is odd because at that height you definitely have to deal with wind shear even on a beautiful day. I am surprised that they don't have a cage or at the very least a support to clip your harness to in the event of you slipping. Also lugging a 30lb tool bag behind you is just downright risky, I'd rather have a rucksack with my tools in it, at least that won't be swinging in the breeze.

 dude seriously? wtf made you think you could do something like this? :rotfl

people who do these jobs are professional climbers. you can't just apply and get a job climbing 1000+ft without some kind of definitive proof you can handle yourself. not to mention, they are most def in awesome peak physical shape to have the confidence to not let go or lose their balance. (yes, balance has ALOT to do with your overall strength and level of fitness)

i watched a special on some discovery thing about the guys who fix those big crazy wind turbines. the guys had such impressive background in climbing it was insane. they are all super comfortable being that high up, it blows my mind.

I applied because it was a job doing something similar to what I do now (low voltage installer) and heights really don't scare me, after all I went to Airbourne school and Air Assault school when I was in the Army, one you jump out of a plane, the other you rappel out of a helicopter. So I figured there wouldn't be too many people applying for the job so it can't hurt to try.
