i'm trying to figure out why the blacktop sr20det is the peferred swap over a rb25det? they are both in the same price range, but yet the rb25det creates much more power. why do people still choose to go with the sr20det? easier install? easier access to parts? what is it?

oh yeah, it's the motor that's in vogues. Average chumps often have no idea what an RB is so they go SR. Some guys do pick the SR for good solid reasons but I think about half of them are just keeping up with the Joneses

rb26 is way different from the 25 for some reason it cant generate nearly as much power. the gts motor isnt much better than the sr20 dont believe me though i havent done much research on the rb25 but stock it generates way more power than the sr20 but after tuned and built i think the sr is a better buy although prices are jacked up as ..... its lighter, easier to install

The reason that the 25 cannot generate near the power of the 26 is not only the slight differance in displacment, but head design. The 26s head is light years ahead of the 25s.

i know all about the different designs of the rb25 & rb26. honestly i dont think its very economical nor worth the pain trying to get a rb26 in a s13. i think for the price, the rb25 is the best way to go. you get 250hp + unlimited power potential, were as the black top sr20 only gets 205hp.

Some of the importers list them as "custom built for customer", but as I'm sure you're aware, I was being faceious.

It's the epitome of "Go big, or go home".

The RB30 is a SOHC engine so you have to swap in the DOHC head. Be sure to get the RB30ET shortblock if you do it, the NA engine has no piston oilers.

Biased a little?

Lets look at some facts.

1. The SR is cheaper to install2. The SR is easier to install3. The SR has more aftermarket parts available for it than the RB254. The SR has 1000 times the stateside backing than the RB255. The SR can and has made the same power as the RB256. The SR is lighter7. The SR is smaller8. The SR is cheaper to modify9. The SR's tech info is more readily available in the US10. The SR is just as strong internally

Just 10 reasons why I went with an SR in my car. The RB is a common swap for people looking to do something different and get that 6 cyl. sound, but that does not mean it is a superior performance benefit over the smaller SR engine.

thanks for the comment, thats the kinda info i was looking for. i just wanted to know why its so much prefered than the rb25. i just moved to the u.s. recently from japan were the rb25 & 26 are the big thing. people laugh at sr20's over there. i've never had a car with a sr20, but i have owned a skyline r32 gtr & a r33 gts-t & i know the raw power it produces stock. i guess in the u.s. the sr20 would be the better (more economical) swap, but i'm having a hard time convincing myself that.

You really shouldn't have to convince yourself of anything. It's just opinion. A lot of people will tell you the 240sx handles worse with an rb in it, some will tell you it doesn't really make a difference. Also you have to remember the price of an sr is more now than it use to be. There's a lot more shops that have done sr swaps than rb swaps too, so you'll have an easier time getting it done if you're not doing it on your own. It's all just opinion and preference, hell, I wouldn't swap in an sr20 or any of the rb line, only engine I've thought about swapping in is the vq30det, however, it's far out of my budget, so I'll stick with the ka because I'm not looking for high hp numbers.

If I was in th e states I would roll the 200 or 240sx with the a worked 300ZX (Z31) VG30ET just for ease of aquisition and maintenance. I am amazed at the lengths you guys go to to put engines in the 240 that have to be sourced on the other side of the world. I wouldn't even try to support a small block Chevy over here. I salute you whatever you run.

Are you sure...I know the red head got 205, but the black top started at 215 in the S14 and up to around 220-240 in the S15 if I remember correctly. The newer RB25's push out somewhere in the region of 250-270.

I've driven R33 GTS-T's and I was not impressed at all by their "raw power", sure they were quick, but nothing thats leaps and bounds faster than any SR or even CA powered 240 I've ever driven. In fact, PalmerWMD's S13 had a simple stock turbo BPU setup on 10 psi and it was faster than the GTS-25T on 10 psi. I think alot of what you were hearing is the typical "my motor is bigger than yours" bench racing.

Plus like you somewhat said... when you have to build your own car here in the US sometimes it's just more economical to go with the "inferior" choice. Especially when there are downfalls to the "superior" choices because you don't have the correct chassis that the engine comes with.

Not to mention, the sr will give your 240 a more balanced weight distribution, and save a few(a lot) pounds from its rb counter-part.

That aspect is important for those who like drive around a track, and for drifters as well.

i understand what your all saying...this is my 1st 240sx that i've ever owned, but i've owned a few nissans in japan to inlcude a r32 gtr, r33 gts-t, and a y32 gloria that had the vg30det. i've driven several silvia's, never a 180sx though, with the sr20det, and i was never very impressed. i think everyone might already know this, but in japan they got a hp law, making it illegal to sell from the factory with over 280hp. the rb26dett had to be majorly de-tuned to get it down to 280 so it could be legally sold. the rb25det also had to be de-tuned to stay below the specs of the rb26dett. with simple mods (under $300), the rb25det goes back to producing its true power of 290+hp. on the other hand, the sr20det never produced enough power to worry about this law, so for the sr20, the hp that you see is what you get.

i guess that both motors has its strength and weaknessess. it seems like it just comes down to personal preference. since the sr20det is more readily available here in the u.s. w/ tons of aftermarket parts, it makes it more perferable. like i said, i've been around nothing but rb's, so naturally that's my personal preference. i know that it has it's disadvantages in a s13, and lack of parts here in the u.s., but it's something about the looks of an rb implanted in the car and the sound of the exhaust.....gotta have it!
