I noticed several weeks ago that there is a nick in the black trim around my rear right window. You can see the metal underneath where some of the black finish has been displaced. Not sure how this happened, as it seems a bit high for rocks or other debris to fly. Anyways, does anyone have any suggestions of how to patch this up? Would black paint or marker followed by some clear coat suffice?

The matte black trim around the windows is actually an adhesive plastic film. It's applied after the car is painted so underneath is the same paint color as the rest of the car.

You can try touching up with some semi-gloss or flat black automotive paint. Clear coating it afterwards may be too glossy so I would leave it.

Philipa is right. I always have a spray can of flat black on hand. Amazing how many nicks and scratches appear on flat black things. I usually spray a small amount into the can lid and then touch up with a fine brush or matchbook match. I've tried permanent black markers, but the color always comes out as much dark purple as black.

Need to do this myself. Just chipped the corner of the driver door on some low overhanging concrete in the parking garage...

I was driving down the highway and a big chunk of ice flew off the top of an 18 wheeler hitting my hood. Not only did it dent it, but also chipped the paint. The paint chip is about the size of a quarter (25 cent coin).

Would it be recommended that I buy a touch up pen from the dealer? or is there a specific brand/type that works just as good, if not better that I can get at a local Canadian Tire? My Rogue is black.

Get something on it for now so it does not rust. The only way to fix a dent that big is to take it to a body shop.

I had the same thing happen to me. Only instead of ice it was a rock. I must say, it made me sick! My did not dent though, only chipped the paint and primer off.

I ordered a paint and clear coat pen from here http://www.paintscratch.com. My Rogue is black as well. Paint matched perfectly although I must say my application leaves something to be desired.

And that's the problem. We simply don't have the know how(95% of us) to repair a chip of that size. Especially on the hood. Time for a body shop visit.

Since I live in Canada, the road salt has already caused the chipped paint area to slightly rust. I was thinking of taking a super fine grit sandpaper to sand it down. Will that be bad for the car?
