if the smoke is from it being rich, you can check items that can cause that condition such as a faulty fuel pressure regulator, coolant temp sensor, air flow meter, etc. before you go into it any further, check the code in the computer, on the earlier cars, you can pull codes by getting to the ecu and turning the mode screw to get to mode 3 so you can retrieve the codes. this may point you right to the cause of the problem. if you don't know the proceedure for the mode screw method, let me know what car it is and i'll type it out for you.
