Black or Brown Smoke is fuel...

If your turbo you are running uber rich, correct it If your N/a then you have a fuel pressure or timing problem

some what rich isnt to harmful, bad on mileage and performance.

too rich you can detonate.

you can also at lower RPMs cause what they call bore wash. thats where unburnt fuel builds up on the cylinder walls and is washed onto the pistons and rods durning the cumbustion cycle, and we all know what gas does to greasy oily things right? bad bad things happen if you have borewash,.

my advice check all your boost pipes and vacum hoses. then check or change your O2 sensor, some black smoke on a turbo car is normal.

i just two days ago was blowing tremendous amounts of smoke and the car ran like poo, i was hitting boost cut at 7psi. but my vacumn was normal, turned out to be a ripped silicone connector on the hot side goin onto my intercooler. fixed it and the car runs good once again, i still blow black smoke but i also have other problemns i have yet to track down. . check your oil for the smell of gas, if its super strong fix the problemn and then change that oil. . ..

Balck smoke could be 02 sensor or time to replace that inexpensive charcoal cannister filter element. The fillter element usually doesn't get touched until it goes. Just a thought

I can't speak for most, but since PA emissions laws are tough, I had kept it in mine. Who knows, implicit might very well still have his. When my S-13 had the started running rich around 150K miles, that $2 element was the fix. I was thrilled the fix was so cheap. Actually the car ran pretty strong rich, but didn't idle as well. It didn't stay rich for long.

Good luck
