Okay so here's my sad story. Spent 20 hours the other day putting in a transmission (unrelated, just a good way to start it off). After i put in the transmission, my car was running like GARBAGE! I knew the timing was off, so i busted out the timing light and got that taken care of. Now the car idles poorly, as oppsed to barely. At the same time, there's a lot of black smoke coming out of the exhaust in idle and under excelleration in lower gears. I'm assuming the smoke still comes out in higher gears, but I think the air's dissapaiting it. Anyhow, any ideas on what could be going on? Spark plugs on cylinders 1,3, and 4 look a little sooty, but i can't quite tell, they're pretty new. I'm pretty sure that all of this is b/c it's running rich, but i'm unable to find a root for the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Air flow meter or coolant temp sensor. Pretty common problems. Do a search for checking airflow meter its been posted many many times. Same with coolant temp problems.
