To do it right costs a lot of money. Probably near the $2k to $3k mark, according to a body shop I asked some time for my wife's car.

With cheaper paint jobs ... you get what you pay for unfortunately!

paint is one area where you wouldn't want to skimp on...it'll come back to haunt you if you do w/chipping, spider cracks, fading, etc. etc.

sell you car and buy a black one.. for a car such as the G, i wouldn't paint it unless i had to..

not only will the paint job will never be perfect, but a color change is a biotch to do. door jams, engine bay, etc etc.

also deminnish your resale value if you decide to sell.

Very true! I guess grey or silver is my next choice. Black looks great, but you really don't see the lines as well as you do on a lighter car. I also like black cause in my mind it doesn't draw as much attention to you.

i don't know why you would want to spend 2 to 3k on a black paintjob anyway. if you spend that kinda money get something a little more original. black is a beautiful color for a car but don't pay to get it done. if you pay for a paintjob, get like royal sapphire pearl or something really nice.

my gf's belt scratched my drivers side front and passenger doors all up (she was leaning against it not trying to do it) and somehow I didn't notice to make her stop, someone did a hit and run on my rear bumper, and I have some paint missing on the top. I paid my buddy's dad who has a "paint garage" (don't know the real term but that is what he calls it) and builds hot-rods and does custom painting only 800 to do it but he told me he'd charge at least 2500 but I gave him my dell laptop as well (had to get an IBM for school). It turned out WAYYYYYYYYY better than the new paint was. If you are near south carolina he is incredible. He owns and runs a customizing/hot-rod/detailing shop but he did my car at his house. I'm actually about to get him to do my side sills again as my grandmother opened my car door into a pole at the gas station but I couldn't really say much to her she helped raise me. BTW this is OT compared to this thread but I bought some of that light cleaning stuff someone posted a week or so ago and it worked WONDERS

I detail lots of very nice cars, and they're usually all black (guess it's what rich people buy). What I've found is that most of the look is your polish/wax, not your paint. I've made red and yellow cars look incredible too. Unless you have scratches, dings, dents, swirls, etc, wax can probably do the job. Bad news is you can't change color of the paint without serious work. Some people prefer to drop engine so they can paint over all existing paint. Not fun. It'll probably take 5-10 steps to make it look like the paint job you were admiring, but it can be done. I can give you a step by step if you'd like, just lemme know.

Here's a picture of an S600 Mercedes I did awhile back. Sorry about quality, it's a cell phone pic

and here's my G after a simple clay and wax <3
