so the other day i was leaving my neighborhood complex, and the speed imit is 15mph driving through my neighborhood. as soon as i started drivin my A/C 3.5, i noticed how the road was a little slick n the water one the ground was freezing. i slowed down a bit going through my neighborhood probably going about 10 mph now. as i approached a sliiiight left turn, i tapped the breaks and started skidding out!! i was headed right for a wooden post on a curb! i avoided the post, but instead slammed the right side of my car up against the curb. both rims on the right side are completely bent!! and the axle is bent as well!!! ON TOP OF THAT....THE PASSENGER AIRBAGS WENT OFF!! the side airbag on the seat went off and totally ripped apart the leather. The side curtain airbag also went off!! and ripped apart the wholee right side of the headliner!!!

i brought it to the local autobody to get an estimate.....ready for this one.....$4,600 to repair!! NOT INCLUDING THE AXLE!!!new seat: $2,0002 new rims: $1,200headliner $1,400

i brought my coupe into the shop this morning...estimated atleast 2 weeks to repair

EVERYONE MAKE SURE YOU GO AND GET YOUR AIRBAGS CHECKED OUT!MY AIRBAGS MALFUNCTIONED AND DID NOT PROPERLY COME OUT. IT IS NOT SUPPOSED TO RIP APART YOUR HEADLINER AND SEAT

This is a very sad time for me right now

Really?!?!? All of that damage was caused from going 10MPH and skidding on black ice?

That really sucks for a seemingly small incident like that. Sorry you had the experience.

But actually the airbags ARE destructive to the interior panels/seats that they behind or in. Seats, headliners, dash, steering wheel... all get destroyed when the airbags deploy. If ALL your airbags go off, the car ends up very close to a write-off, even if the outside damage is minimal. Cars more than two or three years old are often write-offs when the airbags go off. It's one of the reasons that insurance rates have risen since SRS systems were introduced.

Something seems a little fishy here...I live in NY and we get some nasty winter storms / days. To bend both rims and the axel at 10mph... sounds more like 30-35 not saying its impossible at 10 but highly unlikely. The airbags are supposed to save the persons in the car they are not made / designed to make sure your interior stays pristine. If i saw that they all went of and the coverage looked good for the person who would have been sitting there i would have been happy to know they would have not been injured.

As to the repair time its no big deal...they fix your car and you get a free rental. It sux not having your car for a little while but i know the collision shop near me would offer me any car in their lot and if i choose the dealer i could have the same car i am driving.

When I was younger, I hit some ice and cracked a rim on my moms car at the same speed, but 10-15MPH should not do that much damage.

10mph bending the axel? I dont buy it, but anything could happen I suppose...

Something similar happened to me in my mustang (in freehold nj, back in 2000).. Both my tires popped on that side, no damage though.. I was going around 25.

Thats also a silly high estimate, if you want something more realistic, or help with this, just email me.

Glad you are ok though!

Well in my AC accident, I was backing up. didn't even have time to hit 10mph, but I broke my rack and pinion.

airbags seemed a little much. maybe you gained speed while sliding, and your car thought you would flip

Yea I remember reading in the owners manual one time that theres a gyro somewhere that tells the car if its breaking lateral to much. It will set off the side airbags.

my brother totaled his mustang doing donuts and hit a curb.... turned the motor and screwed it up! he was only going like 10-15 MPH sliding around in circles but he totaled it.... plus i snapped my axle when i hit a curb going 25-30 MPH in my 4x4 expedition with the strongest axle they make (they have 3 different kinds for the 4x4 and i had the strongest). so if i could snap a super duper axle doing about 25 MPH and my bro can turn a motor and total a car at about 10 MPH then ya i believe it.... curbs do a lot more damage then you would expect.... its just good that you're ok and also, don't get the crappy stock rims!!! for that price you can get all 4 Nismo rims on sale with tires even

I actually rolled my 1981 Buick Skylark doing about 10 or less, of course I was sliding on ice and went up on an enbankment, it was like super slow mo, I was like 17 and delivering a pizza too...kinda funny when I re-live it...I was like oh sh*t, oh sh*t, ah great,...I crawl out go over to some stangers place and ask to use their phone (remember when there were no cell phones?..or at least you had to be rich and have a brick phone, and it wouldn;t have worked where I grew up anyway..) then my buddies truck went off into the field when he came to help me tow it out too, it was pure ice....I was lucky I could have slid on my roof down over the hill in retrospect. Ah, but my car wasn't worth one of our rims....lol
