i think the show youre thinking of is oil sweat and rigs.... it used to come on the discovery channel... but no, this show is based in west texas, odessa i think... anyways there is a real big differance between drilling rigs and production rigs... i work on a production rig....

I haven't watched it yet, but I've been to a few drilling rigs before and know how demanding the job must be...

I'm a petroleum geologist for a 'mid-major' E&P company - I don't know many folks (outside of work) that understand the industry or just how much work goes from developing a prospect, drilling & completing the well, and extracting the hydrocarbons.

So do you do completions? Is a production rig synonymous with workover rig? How long have you been doing this?

work over rigs do work overs, changing the type of well from say injection to producer or viceversa.... however production rigs are mainly well servicing rigs, the 2 rigs are the same no difference except job tasks.... ive been in the industry for about 4 years on and off... we also do the completions, those are the best sometimes, lots of a$$ time.... lol... do you run gyro survey tools?

Not quite seeing how this thread is relevant to the Versa.

Easily remedied solution.

It is of interest to a Versa owner, who merely asked; he forgot those two all-important letters in his first post, that's all.

Not quite seeing how this post is relevant to this thread. Here's an idea, don't read it if you don't care. Problem solved.

I gotcha. We do run gyros in one of our fields due to the need to drill directional wells because of surface issues. It's a mature field, and it's being drilled down to pretty close spacing, but there's usually some surface problem (pond, house, etc) that keeps us from placing a well where we want it - so we drill from another pad and steer it to the bottom hole location we want.

The primary field that I preside over is young and we haven't had to drill directionally...yet.

Rockhound....don't tell me what to read or not to read. This is a Versa forum. I come here to read posts relevant to the Versa. Commenting that this topic has nothing to do with a Versa is a legitimate observation. How about I start a thread about the price of houses in Tuscon here in the Versa forum. Or perhaps I'll start one about Big Brother or Survivor. There are enough extraneous posts. If I wanted to discuss those off topic things I would post in the appropriate forum. This is a Vera forum for a reason. Tell me how I'm supposed to know what the thread is about without reading it??

yeah but anyways we are subcontracted through oxy, dont know if you heard of them.... i work on Thums Islands Long Beach.... google it, its the only thing like it in the world.... we do alot of directional drilling on these islands as well.... once we had an inner liner job on a well with bottom angle of 10 degrees.... we ran to the top of the old liner but couldnt get in... we were using 2 3/8 liner.... the packer we used was special order, and when we pulled it out of the hole we were missing blades, so we had to run a kill string and rig down and move off... we finished it a couple of months later.... oh yeah and we did a frac on a horse shoe well.... it sucked, i hate running tubing guns, much rather have wire line come out....
