STATES MOVE TO TAX MILES; BLACK BOX IN CARS TELL TRIPS
The devices would track every mile you drive —possibly including your location — and the government would use the data to draw up a tax bill.

as soon as gas-less, and hybrid cars started hitting the mainstream, i instantly thought of: "if cars are using less gas, thus paying less in taxes (when they purchase fuel), its only a matte of time before the money hungry politicians start taxing by the mile".

they cant single out Eco-friendly cars, so everyone will get it across the board. i dont think they will have to read black boxes, etc. they simply will tell you that you must pass inspection every year, and there they will read your odometer, log it, and send you a bill.

Un effing real. If this happens, then im going to get an old car with an analog odo and pick up several gauge clusters for the same car from junkyard all with similar mileage on them and just swap them out each year.

Eff them! Pretty soon they are going to tax our air.

1) You'd only need one extra cluster. Put it in every time you get inspected and then swap it out.

2) You could just use the one cluster in the car and roll it back every time you get inspected to 250 miles more than it displayed the previous year if you go analog. After the inspection, adjust it back to the accurate number, whatever it is, for long-term accuracy.

3) You can probably use method (1) with your Rogue, as long as you add the step of clearing out the black box completely, then driving 50-100 miles on the temporary cluster just prior to inspection.

4) I love my 1985 Camry more and more each day.

you guys would be really surprised how easy it is to "mod" the digital clusters right now(all makes/models). lets not go into that topic further. its a very hot topic with the feds.

Interesting ^... If this mileage tax thing happens, I want you to teach me how to do it! Don't worry I'll keep it on the DL ;-)

I just wish the trip odometer could be reset to be perfectly in sync with the main odometer. I just hit 3000 miles the other night, and I reset Trip A about 8 feet before I hit 3000 miles. Then I reset Trip B about 5 feet after I hit 3000 miles. I was going no faster than 3-4 mph in a parking lot and I slammed the brakes to stop as soon as I hit 3000. Neither one of them would turn over at the exact moment I hit 3001, 3002, 3003, etc.

Oregon launching new program to tax drivers per mile http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2013/10 ... vacy-cost/
the problem for lawmakers is that the existing per-gallon gas tax has hit a point of diminishing returns, as Americans drive less and vehicles become more fuel efficient. The federal Highway Trust Fund, which gives money to states for highway construction and repairs, for example, has needed a congressional bailout four times since 2009, in part the result of no federal gas tax increase in the past 20 years.

I haven't been to this thread in a few days so I just saw your responses... Sounds good man, looking forward to it.

Yeah take care of that back thing... I'm currently in PT for my back too for an injury I got on the job back last October... Its a pulled muscle that I never let heal because I never really had a break from work, and it just got worse and worse and worse and started affecting my suradis (probably not how you spell it) and it has been a b****....

@Rogue One... Thanks for the links too
