You want the widest gap possible...so if they work at .044 leave them be.
I ran stock gap up to 9psi, and never had any misfire or blowout.
Now that I'm at 12psi, I'm at .035 with BKR7Es, and no spark issues.
I'd bet for 6psi stock gap is perfect...and there are no performance advantages to closing the gap, and it won't increase the chance of detonation or anything...wider is better, unless it can't fire.
At 6psi, if it can't fire...you have another issue, like running too rich, or weak ignition system.
