A very close friend of mine is celebrating her 20th birthday. I'd probably rank her as my best friend, if not very close to that. What's a cost-effective way of conveying appreciation for one's friendship without being too sappy or obvious?

Sappy can be bad...obvious is not always bad.

Hmm...a good DVD is a good idea, but that generally isn't enough on its own. Tell us a little about her, because with what I know right now, a good gift may be anything from a manicure to a cloth car cover.

I've given mostly DVDs and scented candles in the past, and she likes them. Candles can reused and enjoyed for years. I'd like to try something somewhat different.

She doesn't have any hobbies that come to mind, or pets, or children.

I might just go for another candle.

Scented candles are good. Maybe a favorite flower or fuit of hers for the scent.

hmmm...Or some scented lotions or something. A friend of mine absolutely loves that Victoria's Secret scented lotion stuff. Though...it's kind of odd being in the store without her with you...

I don't do gifts really, I just take my girl-friends out to dinner. Depending on how much you "appreciate" her, you can have more of her friends come, or you can have a nice private dinner.

P.S.: Reference your quotes Jesda

well this year i took most of my female companions out for a day of go karting. its not as sappy and can be cost effective. But I went to Speedzone which is a lot cheaper than Dromo 1 so yeah...

edit: http://www.dromo1.com is teh awsome by the ways

There is this perfume that most girls I know like. It's called Angel. I love it. It's a bit pricey but well worth the money. Just an idea. Or anything from like Bath And Body Works is great too.

It's hard to recommend a gift if we know nothing about what she likes, how much you wanna spend and your intentions with her.

I think if you've already given her stinky candles and DVD's, then more of the same will come off as uninspired IMHO. If she's that important to you, might consider something a little better than a standard issue female perfumy gift, ya know? She's more likely remember a great day with you than some dusty stinky candle that gets used only when someone takes a power dump in her bathroom, or a chick flick movie she watches twice and files away.

If she's your "best" friend, then you should have a very good idea what she enjoys. You're in the best position to come up with a map out a fun day for her.

For example, if she likes music, splurge and get real good seats to a concert of one of her faviorite groups.

If she likes sports, go to an event, and get them to put her name on the big screen with a happy birthday message. Most arenas do that kinda stuff for free.

If she's adventurous, Do something fun like a sunset ballon ride, followed by dinner (with a cake waiting and waiters that sing Happy Birthday off key.

Make it a memorable day, that's the best gift.

Regards.

Nothing says "you're special and irreplaceable" like a buttplug. Or maybe a big rubber fist.

I can tell you from personal experience that one always works VERY well. Course...there goes half a paycheck or so, but hey, it's worth it.

Just make sure you don't take her to a concert right before valetines day only to find that she gets engaged on valentines day...not a fun feeling.
