Just wondering what kind of bike rack everyone uses to haul their bikes. I pretty much only ride xc so the bike usually gets pretty dirty, so putting it inside the car isn't really an option for me. Right now I am using this one that just straps on to the back, it does the job locally, but I just don't trust it for anything more than a half hour drive on country backroads. I'm thinking of getting a rooftop carrier. Anyone use one? Which one? Likes/dislikes? Heres mine... its pretty much universal, you just adjust it and it straps on to pretty much anything. Just tried it out with my V today, but only went around the block.

I personally don't trust those strappy systems... they seem to put a lot of stress on the integrity of the hatch... I would opt for a roof rack system from Thule or Yakima.

I transport my bike so seldom I just fold down the back seats, quick release the front wheel and put the bike inside the car. I wouldn't mind finding a cheap carrier for the few times I do haul the bike, though.

I'm going to bring this old thread back to life, with your forgiveness. Has anyone ever tried the Saris Bones RS? It's a lockable, coated-metal strap, hatch-mounted bike rack.

Description from their website:
While the engineering and materials that make up every Bones RS are important, we like to think the real genius lies in the design. One of the annoyances with trunk–mounted racks has always been the straps. So we eliminated them. In their place we put a ratcheting system with rubber–coated clips and steel–belted bands for a quick, secure fit on a wide variety of vehicles.

The pivoting, anti–sway frame grips can be tilted for great bike stability and the support arms can be moved closer together or further apart to fit just about any bike — from road to mountain, adult to child.

In addition to eliminating the straps, we also eliminated the hassle of wrestling bikes onto a roof rack. The Bones RS is at the most convenient place possible; right in front of you, on the rear of your vehicle.

We’re certain that you’ll love everything about the Bones RS and that it’s tough enough to last as long as your love of biking. That’s why it’s backed by a limited lifetime warranty, like all of our Saris racks.

Bones RS even includes an integrated locking system to keep the rack safe from theft and in your family longer. Durable, stable and secure; when you invest in Bones RS you’re investing in peace of mind on so many levels.
Here's a link to the manufacturer site and a pic that I found on the Information Superhighway. I'd love to have a Ron Popeil "Set It And Forget it" bike rack for my Versa. Plus, the Saris racks (with the exception of the el cheapo, multi-bike models) are very stylish.

Until I can afford a nicer, multi-bike rack, I have attached a Saris Solo. It looks nice, actually. It looks nice. I'll post pics once I can get them hosted. I didn't realize that we couldn't upload.
