ok ive got a 93 300zx TT with 91k miles. I was on the freeway last night on my way back from Los angeles in a pretty deserted area. A 350Z pulled up along side me and wanted to run em so ofcourse i couldnt refuse. I got up to about 135mph beating him by a about a car length. When i took an exit to get some gas i noticed my car started to make a weird noise coming from the engine. It doesnt really sound like a knock but more like a flapping sound coming from the engine. It doesnt make the sound at idle... it only makes the sound between 2000-3000 RPM. I took it to a few local shops and one guy said something about a piston rod... and the other guy said it was probably the camshaft. So i decided to just drop it off at the dealer.

i just got the phone call from the nissan rep and he said the problem is with the 6th cylinder. Thats where the knock is coming from. He said he is going to to some more research on the available options but basically yea im gonna need a new motor. What are my options? im planning on keeping this car for a long time if not forever. I was thinking of doing a REBUILT by nissan. what do u guys think? Im a little weary about used motors because there is alot of unkowns about them which is why im leaning towards the rebuilt. I know for the rebuilt im looking at about $3,000. I heard alot about the jdm motor are those used motors or rebuilt ones?

I'd be supriced to see a 91k mile motor, even severly abuced develop a rod knock, unless you ran it out of oil or simply never changed the ooil, this is highly unlikely, also a rod knock is gonna get louder as the rpms climb, could have dropped a valve stem but even that is unlikely, sometimes you can get some pretty nasty sounds from a blown turbo gasket, mine ticks like crazy and I even bought the new seals, just too lazy to install them

Nah i was careful with this car until that night. I did the 90k service as soon as i bought the car and changed the oil along with it about a month ago. I checked every fluid including the oil before i set out on my long drive to L.A. I dont know what to do yet. Rebuild the motor or swap one in?

I'm not a VG guy yet but getting one soon... Could it be something else like the water pump or like someone said turbo seals... What about even an exhaust leak??Just because it's at the dealer doesn't mean it is what they say, even though it should be.I'd say drive it some more around your house and see what happens. Do an oil and radiator fluid change to see what the contents look like and go from there..

wow, my typing is bad enough sober but hung over and perhaps a bit grunk still is even worse..

back on topic, I am concerend that you don't need a notor at all, my point is that it is quite unusual for a VG to meet such an early demise, you need to find a good trustworthy mechanic who knows Z's and get a good honest opinion

Sorry man, but it's time for a new motor. My 92tt made the same sound and it just got worse. After many people telling me the little things it could be I had to face the music to the tune of over 3000 for the jap take out. Rebuilt might be a better plan. One of the first mods I would tell you to get on a z32 would be a larger oil cooler and Radiator. Nice High flow bumper will help too. This car has a large and hot twin turbo motor in a tiny space. over heating can be real easy with glowing red turbos.

dealer techs are mechanics just like all the otehrs, the problem with taking it to a dealer is the tech's are used to working on 5 year old car not 15, the tech that works on your car might be looking at a Z32 for the first time, sad but true, the most important thing is to find someone experienced with Z32's and honest, wether they are at a dealer or a backyard shop is not important
