If you got bored of playing BF2 with vehicle-stealing, team-killing, baseraping chodes, you should download and try Department Store Battles. This mod is FREAKING CRAZY and completely refreshes me after getting stuck in a rut in the regular game.
Here's an overview.
MAPS:
The maps are basically the same geographically, but all structures have been replaced with crazy buildings and ships with multiple platforms. Picture a post-apocalyptic road warrior-meets-waterworld setting complete with triple-decker airstrips and towers blistering with gun emplacements... yeah, it's THAT bad-***.
The map usually surrounds a massive walled compound in which the uncappable bases reside. Losing all your bases means you are forced to spawn here and be inevitably fragged dozens of times by the other team. Good luck!
KITS/WEAPONS:
The kits have been renamed to fit the WalMart vs. K-Mart theme, and weapons for each kit remain the same visually. The similarities end there. Take for example, the Sniper kit: each sniper rifle deals about as much damage (including radius) as an artillery blast. Same for the silenced M92, which is even accompanied by the familiar doom-bringing whistle and explosion. Other kits include a grenade launched that fires around 1,000 rounds per minute and a tank-cannon shotgun.
VEHICLES:
One of my biggest gripes about the original game is the ***holes that seem to be present on every server who will TK you to grab the plane or helo you were about to get into. There's no need for that in this mod, in most servers there is AT LEAST a 1:1 ratio of vehicles to players, and the vehicle types are varied enough to keep the rounds balanced and fun.
Oh yeah, I should probably mention that almost every vehicle from the dune buggy to the Black Hawk has rocket boosters. That's right, you can now travel across the entire map in a matter of seconds in a tank, or chase some planes in a supersonic AH-1Z.
As of the 2.7 update, larger planes are now equipped with a fully operational battletank turret mounted on the rear upper fuselage. Just make sure you are in the plane component before bailing out, and while you're in the parachute, try out the rocket boosters on it, too.
OVERALL:
The game's only major flaw is the lack of active players. There are only 3 or 4 servers available including the official dsb server, but finding a good game in progress is hard to do unless you know some friends who have this mod as well and are willing to play when you are.
Look for our clan online in the evenings, we're called mumpus.
