thats right, another new guy to nico. hey its all good but i have a question... do you think sliding in gravel lots or on wet concrete is good practice without shredding your tires too much...

thats a no no to gravel..you wanna nick your paint?

practice when its wet.its easier on your tires.. and remember.. 1/2 speed when wet

if you are worried about tires, give up on drifting.

im not gonna give up on it...but dont the crap tires seem to handle a hell of alot differently than the good(better) ones. most of my friends say that they can get the "hookup" from a friend of a friend of a friend, but is that a reliable way to get tires cheap???

Sure, why not? May not be reliable, but if it is cheap, go nuts.

consistency of a "cheap" tire and a "good" tire can be way different.

BUT as a new driver it doesnt matter. just drive. when you are learning you cant carry a drift long enough or link enough corners to heat a tire enough for that to come into effect.

just use whatever you can find thats cheapest. used, new, whatever.

I'm a "newb" too but my best advise on this is to get cheap whatever tires on lightest rims you have availible, maybe a smaller width tire as well, like a 185, cause like kamin said your not smokin them for that long.BUT if they are real old you may be able to skin them.

nic your paint?lol.. thats the least concern when u start drifting..

and tires? whats that those things i use about 10 of every monthly event..lol.. for where u are starting just use whatever u can get free or cheap.. i suggest getting a set of spare wheels to mount crap tires on no need to balance them for the rear for drifting either so save a couple bucks on that. that way u still have good tires to drive around daily on as im sure like most of us the car u drift is also the car u drive. so keep a good set to drive all week on and when u get to try to do some drifting throw the used crap ones on back.. id suggest picking up 4 steel wheels or whatever u can get cheap or free.. use some crappy tires and get to a practice day.. at the stage u are at now.. u prolly wont use the 4 tires up in an event.. tires dont start to fall apart till the temp gets high.. and it takes more than just a slide here and there on a course to get them hot.. when u begin transitioning and linking corners the tires spin longer and get hotter so they start to fall apart more.. when u get to that level.. u need to dig up some more wheels to mount tires.. pretty soon your drift practice days will consist of u unloading 10 wheels and tires out the back of the car mounting a pair on the rear running a couple runs and swapping the popped tires for another pair..lol.. by that point u realize that new tires are more predictable and used old ones and last a little longer too so rather than have to haul as many tires u start to use half as many but near new or new condition..

tires is part of the equation in drifting.. a BIG part.. i suggest finding a oil/tire place that doesnt resell used tires and trying to score all the free ones u can.. maybe set something up where u come by once a week and take some off their hands. dont rely on someone to hook u up with someone who can hook u up as u said.. just go do it yourself.. dont try to get them free offer to pay for some of them or something.. u never know they may offer to give them to u anyway..lol.

seriously.. the best practice is to take your *** to events... all the gravel road mtn road and parking lot sliding in the world wont amount to what u can get out of 1 practice event with a designated course to follow. believe it.. besides u are up in kernsville with tim and the section 8 guys... talk to them they come down to events in sc all the time as well as events up that way.. they can point u in the right direction.. tim and the guys picked up a few sponsors last year and most got their nopi/formula d license this year too. not really the reason to be drifting but just giving them credentials on what they know..

good luck and welcome aboard

well if u are worried about the looks of your car ull be like most poser drifters who care more about looking good rather than being good.. if u dont wanna mess your car up.. u need to drop the idea of drifting or pick up some other car to do it in.. if uve ever seen a d1 or pro drift car up close they arent as nice as u think.. most have peiced together body kits.. screwed quarters, misaligned fenders and horrible paint.. not because they are any cheaper or harder on their cars.. its really that hard on a car.. one of the ae86s i had i actually seperated the welds from the chassis to the body... TWICE..

so if the gravel chunks hurt your feelings then when u blow a tire midrun and the rubber and wire ruin the paint on the quarter or when u miss a transition and hit an unforgiving cone and it caves your lower rocker(done it) or even clip to tight and eat a cone ripping your bumper off.. you will really be upset.. and i GUARANTEE its gonna happen.

not trying to call u out or argue with u bro so dont think im trying to jump on u or anything..

hey i happen to like gravel, easy on tired, makes lots of noise and dust, and best of all, you learn real quick what ditches do to your car, so then you know not to puch your limits when its a wall there instead

im not an experienced drifter by no means, hell youre probably better than me, but from what i understand drifter s is an experienced drifter and knows what hes talkin about, listen to what he has to say and with lots of time and work you can be good to, i plan on makin him teach me real soon, like as soon as i stop breakin cam cap bolts off and figure out what ive got to have on my mani lol. but yea listen to some of these experienced drifters, im sure no one is tryin to point you in the wrong direction

Im not one of those more looks kinda guybut for now since this is my ONLY car.. id rather not deliberately try to nick the paint in Gravel..he asked about gravel.. i would never "try" to drift in gravel.

i know what you say when drift cars arnt pretty up close.. believe me i know.half my car is fading ..and i dont ever plan on painting it.. all i can do now is try to preserve best i can what ever crappy paint job i have now..thats all im saying

when it all comes down to it..id drive a rust wagon.. so long as it out performs every car im put up against.

ON the other handDrifter S i heard you stopped by TDC today.... too bad i wasnt their cuz i still havnt been able to get a good look at your 86 man..Justin (at TDC) said he, and i quote, "Cant believe he didn't hump it".. or something along those linesbut yeah.. i hear its a nice 86 man.

yeah its not as nice as of today.. we went on some runs this morning starting at 5am.. when i got home at about 5pm... i had nicked a guardrail which knocked the bumper off and damaged the fender..lol.. and no i wasnt trying to drift nor was i hauling *** in the blinding rain.. car started to hydroplane then it went to understeer.. my usual reaction to understeer is more throttle to upset rear traction to make the car turn in.. but due to the new big 15" wheels the rear traction doesnt break so easy so i just continued on towards the guardrail.. skidding to a stop and making a mess..lol oh well it comes with it man.. the 86 has a few scars anyway.. prolly have a few more before its over.. i take pride in knowing that im not a ***** who builds a pretty rare car like that to the status it is and is willing to visit touge a few days a week in it..

i did manage to eat a fd twin turbo for breakfast over and over on one of the touges we ran..lol.. tell me that doesnt make u feel good.. blasting away from that kinda car uphill and downhill over and over with ease..lol. i can live with the damage of running on the wash out road if i can pull that off with no regrets..lol. ill be around as usual.. prolly stop in sometime this week too.
