Hello everyone. This is my first post. I have been a long time Nissan owner and have been happy with the brand. I was bummed by the changes to the 2013 pathfinder, but that is another story.

I have talked to several mechanics and people who are car guys and everyone is stumped. I have a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder. I got it new and it has been a great car. Anyway, it runs great and when running, the instrument cluster works fine. But, when I shut the engine off by turning the key, the display in the cluster lights up and turns off randomly and a couple of the gauges rotate upward and then downward. It continues to do this. It was doing this continuously this morning. Crazy huh. Have you heard of anything like this? I don’t even know what to replace first.

Thanks.

Chad

Have you checked the "ground" wires? On my Pathfinder I know there is a couple on top of the intake manifold, one on the drivers side engine block, and one to the battery negative cable on the passenger side engine block. Check out the FSM to find where your grounds are, I know the two on top of intake are the most important ones.

Thanks. I will check that and look at the wiring diagrams.

I thought it may be a relay giving some power to the instrument cluster. Maybe some current linking through. It is sure odd to look at, seeing all the gauges move about with the keys out.

Hard to explain with words and I dont have a picture handy.. There are so many different circuits that interface with the gauge cluster that if just one of them that normally still gets power with the key off loses its normal ground it may backfeed into another circuit to use that ground. Start with making sure it is constantly replicable. Then pull 5 or so fuses out. And check again. Replace those 5 and pull 5 more till you narrow down a few fuses/circuits that are suspect. Dont stop at the first fuse you find.. you will want to go through them all.

Once you know what fuses are involved it might help us to help you.

Finding those loose grounds can really by time consuming

As an update, I did not find anything wrong when I looked, but I admit I am not a great mechanic or even a not so great mechanic. I took it to the dealer and they say there is a short in the instrument cluster. They have ordered the part and are installing it today. I hope that fixes the problem. It is possible there is a short in there. The service guy said there is control board in the part that can go bad. We will see. I am always concerned they just start replacing part without being sure it will fix it.

It stopped doing it today, so it is intermittent problem.

I will report back with an update later. Thanks.

Hi All. Final update. The dealership replaced the instrument cluster (part only was about $350) and it seems to have fixed the problem. They were able to accurately diagnose the problem and replace the part to fix the problem. If you have a similar problem, that might be the cause (short in the cluster)

Thank everyone.
