Lots of old threads on this.

1990 and 1994 might be my favorites.

1990 was lightest and fastest, because there was no speed limiter on the first month or so of production.

1994 had the availability of everything including TCS, HICAS, Active, and a freshened body and interior.

94's probably the way to go. Some later 95s had all kinds of goofy electronics and were like "OBD 1.5", meaning they didnt use the older style connectors and sensors.

If you don't require HICAS, I like the final OBD I configuration of the late 1995 with all the modifications.

Since you're the guy that's been talking about swapping a VH into a J30, I'd suggest finding an early early 90, make sure it has metal backed guides, rehab the externals, re-seal the valve covers, replace the hoses under the plenum, etc.

All the folk-lore says the earliest production runs engines were the best .

If you're talking about the car as a whole, 94 or early 95 t's, stay away from actives.

Did they ever redesign the fuel pump, which seems to be a common problem on the 90-93

The FPCU was slightly redesigned for the FGY33. Fuel pump is essentially the same for all VH series. No problem with frequent filter changes and no contaminants in gas.

I can't recall one failing before 90-100k ... would that be considered a premature failure?

I agree with Rex, fuel pumps are NOT a problem with g50 series Q. I replaced factory original at 110,000 which still worked, but was beginning to get audible, that one currently has 106,000 miles on it and is still quiet.

I don't see fuel pump as a 120K maintainence items in the owners manual. I guess if you want to replace it, it's okay.

Fuel pump is nor a maintenance item listed for periodic replacement in owners manual, rather it is replaced when it fails, or before it fails by astute owners who recognise the noise it begins to make signaling its old age. Best to replace at first notice of noise in order to prolong life of the more expensive pump control module.

Not all parts are considered scheduled maintenance (alternator, water pump, AC compressor, etc), I say this falls into that category. Mind you I'd like for all these types of parts to never fail, but they do. What would be considered a "reasonable life" for a fuel pump?

If what you said is true you should have every piece that moves or contains rubber replaced by 120k as the maintenance. Man the dealer would love that, "that'll be $10,000, we accept cashiers check, or your gold card" Of course they're not going to put it in the owners manual!!!!!

My fuel pump is going on 50k miles in 2 Q45s and its just fine, still silent (knock on wood)...

No ones forcing you to replace anything, but heed the advice or pay the price!

Depends if you believe in preventative maintenance or drive it till it breaks and you're stranded maintenance. A neglected fuel pump will take out your FPCU, which is twice as expensive. A lot of the systems in the car are that way; neglect something minor and you end up replacing something major.

I look at it this way. If it is not in the maintainence book, it's probably consider a repair (unless it is other maintainence items nost listed) since most parts SHOULD last the life of the vehicle. If every fuel pump dies at 120K, chances are that it is a problem area since no one can avoid the inevitable. At least with hoses and engine, it can vary depended on luck.

1993 - first gear start, seems to have more leg room and feels sportier than 94+

94+ has different harnesses than 93-

Just from my research, if your looking at which ENGINE is the best, I'd have to say any, lolIf I've read correctly its all the same engine and they were all hand built and take very well to harsh beatings.
