Hey, i am looking to find out what year is best for my budget, and the planned modifications i am looking for...

This is going to be my first car and i am not looking to spend more than around 5K for the car itself, i was thinking along the lines of a fastback '93, but i also plan on doing a sr20det swap, and i am wondering if this model easily passes, or has any specific issued passing emmisions after a swap. I know the 95 as far as the s14 goes is supposed to be the easiest to get to pass, so i dont know if the 13s have a similar situation. I am also looking to install a stage 2 turbo....now i am kind of a newbie to cars, so i don't know if stage 2 is the appropiate name, or if another turbo can be added, but i am under the impression it can. T2 or T3 flange, correct? Atleast from HKS, i don't know if all turbos use those specificifications. Plus intercooler and all that good stuff.

I know i said i wasn't looking to pay that much for the car, and yes i know these modification will cost around 2k a piece, if not more...a friend of mine who did a sr20de swap in his sentra said there are 2 places in cali that stock black/red tops for about $750, I don't remember the names..but they are fairly popular.

also, this will be an everyday driving car, just want some speed, probably suspension and exterior after the engine, so i am not looking for suggestions of a 500HP turbo with a misfiring system or anything that will kill my engine in 500 miles.

but all help would be appreciated, thank you in advance.

Welcome to Nico!

I would say that if 5k is your budget for the car itself, go for an S13, you should be able to pick up a clean one for 2-3K, save a little cash for the engine swap. As for the emissions, if you're doing an SR20DET swap, depending on local laws, I don't think it will pass wether you put it into an s13 or s14. As for working on the car itself, make sure you get all the basics (fuel system upgrades, intake, downpipe, exhaust, boost controller, clutch, etc.) before you jump to swapping the turbo. You gotta do your research before you start tearing your car apart. Huge power is sweet, but its not gonna do you any good if your motor can't handle it. I know you don't wanna spend a lot of money on it, but you gotta pay to play man. Good luck !

yup yup, i know about doing the intake, exhaust, boost controller, intake and whatnot. But i believe the 95 can be brought up to speed for emmissions in cali. I live in AZ, but i dont know how the regulations are here as for more or less strict than most of the nation, i would think less because AZ still has alot of redneck southwest laws, so i dont know, i will need to look into it more i guess.

Since most of your States decided to cut back on pollution. There's a reason why JDM 240's/Silvias have that engine, and we don't! :(

emission testing is a joke, the emissions have to be pretty bad to not pass (at least in my state). but even if it passes emissions it is still illegal to have in your car.

nope. No sr swaped 240 can be checked. It wouldnt pass the visual part, unless you have the "hook-up".

Exactly... here in Cali they look out for things like that.... it COULD pass the emissions it self but the visual it will fail for sure... you might get away with it from cops since the engine says Nissan on it and everything... but I'm sure you will get jacked some how.. you have ot get smogged every 2 years.. I'm planing to get my smog.. cuz it's coming up... then do the swap so I will be straight for atleast 2 years! =) then I'll have 2 years to find a "hook up"!

redline240, thank god I have dual citizen ship ^-^. I will claim diplomatic emmisions immunity and then slip the guy at the emmisions place $50. haha. anyways after talking with a friend of mine about stuff tonight while he was teaching me to drive a manual, i think i am just going to keep the KA engine and just do a turbo on that. Money will then go to things such as suspension and other engine things. I think i am just going to focus on real driving (coarse/mountain/etc) rather than thinking i am going to be able to put together a car for dragging or something for under 14 or 15k....thanks for all of your input.

Why cant we get the sr20det or similar things over here? One word....POLITICS!. It really has little to do with the environment.

well. see I am thinking it comes from the fact that we have 4 or 5 big cities such as LA, NY, Chicago, etc with smog issues. so all the activists come out of the woodwork and cry about it and the whole nation gets effected. =[

Yes we have a smog problem, but most of that actually comes from industry, not vehicles. Besides, you cant tell me that an sr20det, rb26dett, or any other jap motor we cant get over here pollutes more than an 8.0 liter v-8 in a truck. So if you live somewhere that doesnt have inspections, go for the swap. (no inspections here in GA, the only good thing about this state.)
