hey fellas i bought this turbo of a guy locally, his about to send it, how do i test it when it arrives ( know i can be defenitive till i put it in) but what are some tests...

im pretty sure its a t28 of a rb20 importer (no idea if its ball bearing or not)

i know i can shake the shaft see if it plays or spins freely, also can check for oil deposits etc, anything else?

if it doesn't spin when you blow into the turbine housing, it's junk. it should spin at least that freely and have minimal shaft play. You can't really look into the oil inlet/outlet to get a good idea of the condition of the bearings as they are out of sight. Of course if there is buildup at that point, its a bad sign anyways. good luck!

also, all the rb20/rb25/rb26 turbos are ball bearing

thanx for that info well it seems to spin freely, but my concern is every now and then oil would come out from the compressor inlet/outlet, this turbo hasnt been used for quite a while, but is this a bad sign of busted seals?

also i really dont think this turbo is ball bearing, i thought the gt28 was ball bearing and the t28 wasnt?? i could be wrong

Wow, the blades should spin freely, but i dont know of many turbos that will spin by simply blowing on the turbine. It should spin freely with your fingers, should have minimal shaft play in/out, up/down....and shouldnt leak oil. The factory lines on most turbo cars tend to supply more oil than what is really needed.

yeah ive never owned a turbo i can blow to rotate (that sounds bad)... but im just worried why the turbo has slight oil leaking from compressor inlet and outlet... i havent tested it, im thinking of pouring oil down the oil feed and spinning the shaft at the same time to see if it leaks oil out the compressor, could anyone provide any help on other ways to test it?

As far as I know not all the stock skyline turbos were ball bearing. A local RB20 owner had his turbo until it blew and it wasn't ball bearing. I gave him mine which was. So it depends on the turbo. I know if theres a " V " on the side of the turbo its ball bearing.

Cheers!

side to side is bad. since its a ball bearing turbo its going to have some in and out play, possible a LITTLE side to side. thats normal.

and most turbos you cant blow into the turbo and get it to rotate, so dont use that

just check for shaft play and hope. thats all you can do. used turbos are a crap shoot.

Yea you will see a V right before or after Nissan emblem. If you post up pics we'll help you determine whether you have it or not.
