I have to chage a transmission in a S14 Sr20det red top next week and I know that the transmissions are a pain to remove with the engine in the car. Does anyone have any tricks to go about removing the trans easy.

Thoughts::confused: Drop Engine crossmember a couple inches so the transmission slides out.

 Remove the engine mounts so that the engine sits lower

 Remove engine mounts and slide engine and trans foreward.

If anyone has done any of these please enlighten me as to your experience in doing so.

Thanks for the replys in advance.

You can do it without touching the motor mounts but it can be a biatch to slide it off. You can also loosen the motor mounts and angle the transmission and motor but it sometimes makes it harder. Either way its a biatch. And definitley drop the member out da way. good luck.

You shouldn't have to touch the motor. When I did my motor/transmission swap, just unbolt the trans mount, remove driveshaft, remove all bell housing bolts, disconnect the clutch slave cylinder and your trans sensors, and it shouldn't be that difficult.

I am no where near being a mechanic, but I got my KA motor and trans out, and got the SR motor and trans back into the car in a matter of a day doing it this way.

I've done trans in an s13 before and it was a PITA without removing the crossmember. The s14 can't be any better. We will have the car on the lift

Do yourselves a favor and find a transmission stand. This will save you a HUGE headache. (Unless of course you like holding up 150lbs for up to an hour.)

Just an update, thanks for your inputs, we got the trans swapped out in an hour and a half. We ended up un bolting the steering rack and droppig the crossmember. Worked out great, thanks again NICO!

If you take off the transmission brace and let the engine droop then you can remove all bolts and pull the transmission. To get it back on all I did was use a engine brace on the crank pulley to tilt the engine a bit so I could get the transmission on easier.
