After dealing with on and off overheating problems I've realized I need a water temperature gauge. The stocker is like "fine,fine,fine...Holy Sh*T NOOOO!!!"

So I'm pretty set on the cyberdyne digital water temp gauge. My only question is, whats the best and most affordable way to hook it up? This is the cyberdyne sender unit:

Which is typically sold seperately. If I got this would I have to buy one of the greddy adapters to put it in the upper radiator hose or is there a simpler way to go about it? I have heard some people saying the stock sender unit for the dash temp gauge works as well. Anyone care to point me in the right direction? Funds are wearing down as it's school time and I don't want to waste any money.

Oh, btw this is for a rb20det in a 240sx coupe.

easiest route to go with. You have to remember that the Greddy units usually don't use standard stread, they used metric. The nissport's are standard.

I just went to Autozone and bought a cheap FAZE water temp gauge. Plugged it right in, took 15 minutes tops.

plugged right in where? to the stock gauge sender unit's preexisting wire? Or you took out the stock sender unit and put in this new one?

You have to keep the stock temp sensor to the ECU in place or your motor will run rich. The gauge temp sensor is the single blue wire that you can swap out with a new one that comes with the gauge kit if it has the same thread. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on that. The only thing is that your cluster temp gauge will not operate.

I highly recommend the HKS fab controller, it has a digital temp readout and adjusts fan speed to maintain an ideal engine temperature of your choosing. I love it, definately worth the money.

i drilled and tapped a hole in my intake manifold near the coolant outlet, gives hella accurate readings.

I got myself one of these http://www.racingworks.com/gauge_misc.htmhad to run a tap through it for an NPT thread, but have had no problems.

So if the hks fan controller can use the stock gauge harness can other gauges do the same or will they read incorrectly? If I'd seen the HKS unit yesterday I'd probably have gotten it, but I just payed for an EZ pod for a normal style water temp gauge.

Also, looking at the cyberdyne gauges, theres 8 options...

silversilver with sendersilver with memorysilver with memory and senderblackblack with senderblack with memoryblack with memory and sender

It's only $7 more to get the one with peak and low hold memory, but thinking about it, is there any reason why I would ever want a peak hold memory on the water temp gauge? On a boost gauge its nice to see what the boost spikes to or what the most boost you run is and useful on other gauges too, but would it ever come in handy on a water temp gauge? All 8 of the options have a scrolling adjustable high warning though.

So, is the RB20DET coolant hose the same diameter as the stock KA hose? I am assuming so because the radiators are interchangeable, you use the ka koyo...

I need to be sure before I order a sender adapter that the inner diameter is the same as the 240sx.

Darius, you can take out the factory gauge cluster plugin that is for the temp sensor, it doesnt run to the ecu just to the body harness/gauge cluster, you must be thinking of the CHTS ( Cylinder Head Temperature Sensor ) is the one that runs to the ECU and will run rich if unplugged. I just put a temp sensor in my greddy intake manifold where the stocker goes and it work perfectly and i dont run rich. ~12.3 afr

I think you misread Darius' post. He said the same thing you just said.

There is a coolant temperature sensor for the ecu, which is always required. There is another coolant temperature sensor, single wire, for the gauge cluster.

Darius' was saying that you could remove the gauge cluster sensor and replace it with a sensor for a different gauge if you wanted. But if you did this, you would obviously lose the coolant temp sensor in the gauge cluster.

The coolant hose is the same diameter as the KA. So you can get one of those adapater for a KA and it should work for you. Just make sure that the thread pitch of the adapter fits the new sensor's thread pitch. Some are 1/8" BSPT while others are 1/8" NPT.

I have defi gauges and they are BSPT. But I have the upper radiator hose sensor adapter and it works perfectly. The got a BSPT adapter from SPL Parts.
