I am putting in all my performance parts this week ( intake, header, high flow cat and exhaust ) and was going to reset the timing, or at least check, to factory specs. My understanding is that you can advance the timing to get a little more power on N/A motors. Is this true? What are the positive things this accomplishs? What are the negatives?I am going to search some more here and on a few other boards but could those of you who have changed/advanced your timing share some info on were it should be set. Thanks

No cons...all pros here. You will have to run premium gas, but you should be doing that anyway...

Stock base is 20 BTDC...I like to advance it a couple, maybe 22-23. Any more and you may get a little knock.

When you set it YOU MUST unplug the TPS and set the idle to ~700rpm...any other way anf the ECU will still screw with timing and it'll be set wrong.

So...

Warm motor...

Unplug TPS...

Make sure idle is at ~700rpm...

Race motor to +3000rpm 3 times...

Let it settle.

Set timing.

Plug TPS back in.

Done.

Coolness, thanks for the info. I may not get that done before I go to the track on Friday but it will be done soon. Should I wait until after the intake is installed to do the timing advance or it does not matter? I would assume it doesn't matter cause once the timing is set it won't change but still want to ask. BTW got the header cat and exhaust in last night in less than 4 hours by myself, was told that was pretty fast but I wasted alot of time with that stupid EGR pipe fitting. I alos couldn't correctly torque the header nuts but with my years of experience as a mechanic ( read: educated guess ) I tighten them as close the the ones I could torque as possible.ABTW how long should it take to install a basic intake setup on my car? I am planning on doing it at the trak before my first run friday but would like to have an idea on how long it will be. It's just a cheapy ebay setup but I wasn't spending the $200 for a standard intake from Injen just to pull it out and sell it for $50 when I go forced induction ( I am already going to take that bite when I pull the header )

five minutes depending on whether or not you know how to get the stock intake off. If not... a few minutes to figure that out added on.

Sounds good, I'm just gonna go back to my place and put it on before I go to the track just so I don't have to find a place to put my tools while I'm heading down the track Would be a bit embarassing to hear my **** flopping around in the trunk on take off's
