I live in Boston, and this will be my J's first winter. RWD doesn't scare me (I've driven an Alfa GTV6 in snow), but I want to make sure I get snows that will do the best job. What's good in ice, and what's good for deep snow?

Are there any all-seasons that would be sufficient (if they're M+S rated)? Who has gotten by with good all-season tires? I am sure my hi-perf. summers will not do the trick!

I welcome and appreciate any advice!

Thanks.

I have seen the tire thread. But I'd like to know people's experience specific to the J30. I wonder if anyone's used an all-season tire that's still gotten them through deep stuff without it being too scary. Or, are snows the only real option on the J30?

I ran premium all-season through deep snow when drove the car in the winter. But than again, I attended BMW's winter driving school and learned proper snow driving and braking technique using both winter tires and premium all-seasons.

I equip my wife's car with winter tires. Take a look at the Hankook Ice bears and Toyo Observe winter tires. both are performance oriented and in the Observe's case, most tire dealers up here recommend them over the Blizzak.

Hello Ross,

I live over in Breckenridge Colorado, we get about 300" of snow each winter. I have researched snow tires pretty well over the years.

My wife works for a van company they have 200 15 pass vans they run from Denver airport to the ski areas. These guys have experimented with snow tires for twenty years. They run only Nokian brand. I ran the the Nokian on my wifes Honda 4x4 the last two years. They are without a doubt the finest snow tire I have ever used.

They have some down falls, soft compounds wear out quicker. I say if you want the best try the Nokian they will out perform the blizzack hands down.

I have an old M30 and am running a Cooper Wintermaster St. They are cheap and do a fair job. I dont use the M30 in the snow much.

Good luck with your purchase, a foot of new snow here this AM!

Thanks, Steve

My 300ZX would not even move in a light snow with summer tires. So, I would put four Blizaks on it in the winter and it would go through any thing. Amazing really.

You will need Winter tires with a RWD in New England! You will want to find some old steel wheels to mount them to so you don'tdamage your rims!

Those Blizzaks will serve you well. This year the Toronto area is overdue for snow. We usually have had 1 or 2 snowfalls by now, although it never lasts to long on the ground.

I was rockin' Arctic Alpins on my 240sx . . perfect match for that car. Soooooo much fun, and impossible to get stuck.

I like those... I bet they'd do just fine on a J30. I need a set for my QX4.

EXACTLY how the 240sx behaves. I'd get it stuck in 1/4 inch in a parking lot, yet with snows I took off and beat a 4x4 Jeep from a standstill.

i ran artic alpins on the car for 4 winters, it handled just about anything that mother nature could throw at it...even a freak snow storm that completely buried the car over nite and made a mess of the roads...i'm running the michelin x-ice now and its so far chomped thru everything...

here's a pic of the car when it was burried, can you see a J in there? :D

trying to dig it out...

HAHA! What an appropriate user name. Yeah, I thought an SUV was under that mound of snow.

Glad to see the X-Ice are decent as well -- I'm going to want a set for my QX4. 240sx is for sale, but hopefully I can still pick up a J in the not too distant future...

Front engine, RWD cars . . . for the win, as they say (I am extracting some fun out of the QX4, but without the confidence of a car)

Hey man, I'm in Boston too!

I was really worried about driving in the snow with the J30, after only driving AWD for about 5 years before owning this car

Anyway, before the snow came I dropped about $500 for some nice all season tires, with good rain and snow performance ratings.

The first time we got hit with around 4-5", I fired her up nice and early, called out of work, grabbed some coffee and spent the whole day learning how to own RWD in the snow.

I was going up steep hills (everywhere in Boston) and cruising no problem, just get the technique down, and a good set of all seasons AND YOU WILL BE FINE! I was worried for months!

Good luck, if I see ya cruising one day, I'll beep! I'm in Dorchester!
