In my opinion you can't do better than a V1! Me and my wife each have one and they have saved us countless times.

Get a valentine 1, I have one and it is the best one around. They are about $400 but worth every penny. I can't tell you how many times it has saved me.

Now due to my general lack of every using a radar detector, but the time you hear the shi-t beeping do you have to time to slam on the brakes and take their reading down by 20 or 30 mph hopefully not resulting in the jackass on the cellphone behind you rear ending you? Because cops I can usually see JUST about the time I go by them, and if for $400 I am just going to get a beep 2 seconds before I would see them anyways, I dont see the value...

Are you talking about instant-on? Most places do not have them. The V1 gives you ample warning typically. I've only come across 2 instant-on radars in maybe a dozen long roadtrips, both in Utah. No sense slamming on the brakes if you hit one, and if you get rear-ended maybe you'll get out of the speeding ticket. You can improve your chances by learning to interpret the signs of instant-on up ahead.

you have plent of warning with the V1. You just have to get use to using it. It is worth the money.

With an Instant-on you are screwed anyway. It doesn't make any difference if you have a $70 R/D, a $400 R/D or no R/D. They are not 100% accurate and never will be but I will say that a V1 is life saver 98% of the time. In my opinion.

I'm going to pile on with the V1 too! As far as instant-on, yes it's bad if you get a direct hit - but having the V1 finding those blasts on down the road hitting other cars can help. If it's just you and "the man" late at night or early in the morning you're screwed. Sometimes it's helpful just knowing if you've been hit... if you're in traffic or in the right place, sometimes you can take evasive action like hide behind a dumpster in nearby shopping center or kick it up to 110, take next exit while he's turning around in a muddy median, park in a parking lot and browse a store for 15 minutes - that's my favorite! :)

The concealed display is great... worth the extra $40.

If you are in moderate to high traffic and they are using instant on the V1 will give you plenty of notice when they shoot a car ahead of you. If there isn't much traffic or it is late at night you have to use some common sense:1. Find a pack of cars running fast and settle into the rear of the pack. Let somebody else "take one for the team".2. Get a CB and listen to the truckers3. Run a reasonable (5 to 10mph) over the limit and you should be cool.4. Always, always get back and stay in the right lane. The cops always are looking at the guy in the left lane first. With experience you learn to read the V1. It is an incrediblepiece of engineering if you learn how to use it.Good luck!

So, the conclusion i've drawn from this is, in anything but medium light traffic it's worthless. If you are in a pack and not leading it (any moron knows this) you wont be getting pulled over, and if you are alone which is when most people go REALLY fast it's worthless yet again, so medium light traffic in a city with cars you get to play slolom with is the only time I can see it being effective. (P.S. I didn't mention being a deausch and swerving in and out and jumping lanes on a packed highway because that is just retarded)

You mean worthless against instant-on? That's almost a fair statement I guess. Almost, since there's still a chance of catching signals from up ahead. I've never gotten a speeding ticket in the 4 years of ownership, and I can honestly say that the V1 is the reason. Don't think something is worthless just because it "only" works 98% of the time.

There is no detector that can pick up instant on until it is activated. If a trooper shoots somebody ahead of you the V1 will pick it up from further away than any other detector. Mine has picked up signals from as far away as a mile. When you learn how to interpret it, the V1 is the best in the business.I have driven from coast to coast many times and never gotten a speeding ticket (and yes i have been known to drive rather quickly). Just simply plugging in a radar detector is not going to work by itself.

I think its real valuable to rceive bleed over from other cars being shot up ahead.,

When your only car on road its more dificult but thats rarely the case.

I think the conclusion you need to draw from this Toki is do not buy a radar detector as any one of them would be useless to you apparently. Just use your instincts. Maybe they will work better for you and there free!

Good luck on that.

I'm not sure where you got that! I think what everyone is saying, or at least what I'm saying - is that it's just another tool, like keeping your eyes open or watching for brake lights up ahead. The V1 is the best tool you can buy.

Just know that a radar detector won't make impossible to get an invitation to fund your local PD's next trip to

:D

I have a Valentine one. It was 399.99 and it is fantasticc. It has saved my butt many times. When it was about 1.5 yrs old, it quit detecting signals. I called Valentine one and returned it. They fixed it and sent it back ...NO CHARGE. That is class ! Once you get used to the arrows it has, you will never want another arrowless radar detector again. My brother in law saw mine in action returning to So. Fla from Key West and he ordered one promptly.

Sorry, but I will go with the test results from Car & Driver over Radar Busters.com. I will also go with my own 10+ years of ownership of Valentines products. I can't tell you the number of times that my V1 has gone off and a guy has passed me with another detector hanging from his winshield only to see him/her slam on their brakes after passing me. V1 is the most accurate radar detector in the business. It also tells me how many and where they are.Enjoy your Passport, I'll stick with the proven (by my experience) V1.

Well, anything is better than nothing. If you avoid just one average ticket, the item will probably more than pay for itself between the fine and the insurance upper over the next 3 years. Even traffic school will cost $100 or more. I don't think 80mph on a straight divided highway with no traffic is unreasonable, but it's still 15 over in some states.

Toki, Nothing is 100%, but if you feel it's not worth spending, then by all means save your cash. But there's a reason people buy them, an extra margin of safety against revenue generating operations run by the locals.

If you use them properly, they are wonderful. Are they perfect? of course not, but I'm not asking for 100% protection, not even trojan can make that mark.

If you want 100% protection, then abstenince is your only choice.

Any radar detector is better than none. However, you can still get nailed by instant on unless you realize that when you see a quick KA signal, it usually means radar is being used within 1 mile so beware. That is why I like the Valentine One. The arrow shows yoy which direction the signal is coming from and if there is more than one signal.
