I was in the market for a complete new timing chain kit.I don't want anything performance (unless it's relatively the same price, or cheaper, than factory-spec). I also don't want to buy things I don't need to replace.

Basically the thing rattles a bunch at specific RMPs, such as 1900-2200, and around 3k, and when decelerating to a stop, rattles a bit around 1000.I think that qualifies as just a basic kit, and I need to know where I can get the best deal on quality parts.

Ebay had some for $125... any tips?

Don't buy garbage for something as important as a timing chain. Get it from a dealership like Midway (sponsor) or Pinnacle (another sponsor) or Courtesy or another local Nissan dealership.

The sponsored sites don't seem to have the 'kits', they carry individual pieces sold separately.

Should I be looking to buy a complete kit, or if not, what should I order (by piece) from the sponsors?

I feel your pain...I searched till my eyes bleed from reading to no avail, from what I have found every kit I have seen has been aftermarket stuff, somewere in the KA forum someone was talking about an aftermarket kit that is supposidly quility stuff, but timing is damn important and its upto you who you trust when i comes to vital engine componants. It seems the only way to go oem is to piece it together. I recently did so from courtesy nissan for around $400...this includes a watter pump but no new sprockets. what you need can vary depending on how much wear their is but I went for new guides(1 tension 1 slack side) chain (upper and lower) crank shaft oil seal tensioner (1 upper 1 lower apperently due to design change you need new bolts too)

I feel like im leaving something else out but those are basics that get used pretty hard. Check out courtesy nissan they have a link for "timing chain kits" witch is just a page with all the idividual components listed also see if midway cant meet or beat them (I woulda gone through midway, you can always find Dantech around the boards, buy they don't have the other stuff I was getting)

edit:grammar and spelling pnws me agian...

Thanks for the reply- buy oy! There are about 15 parts listed under timing.I really don't even know what all I would need! They sell all the gears for around 40 a pop, but to my understanding, its just the chain that is breaking down, and possibly the tensioners, and the fact that the guides are breaking.

Would I necessarily need new gears, new sprockets, the camshaft and crankshaft gear sets, etc.?

I don't want to overdo anything. I just want that horrid rattling away, and I don't want to feel like my engine might come apart soon.

what you should do first, is take the timing chain cover off and check the upper guide. The KA is notorious for having the upper guide go bad and rattle. Fortunatly, you don't need it, and can't replace it because Nissan says you don't need it. If that's the problem, just remove it and go on your merry way.

I've never seen a sprocket that needed replacing. It has always been the tensioners and the guides for the most part. The chains never really needed replacing from what I've seen, except in one case where the lower chain got stretched a bit. But if you're down there, might as well change the chain, there could be cracks and such on the links that I could have passed over as I was replacing those as well. My recommendation, get the stuff Courtesy has on their list.

If you can find a kit on ebay made by Tsubaki, it seems to be quality stuff. I installed this kit on my car and have not had the slightest hint of chain noise. I researched it a while back and found out that they either do make, or at one time made the OEM timing components for Nissan. I payed $150 for my kit on ebay and it included everything but the sprockets which had no abnormal wear on them anyways.

If you wan't to go cheap, just replace the guides and the tensioner. If you want the full (and recommended) job, then replace both the chains and the sprockets also. Don't just replace the chain with out replacing the sprockets, you will speed up the wear process on your new chain by running on worn cam and crank sprockets, and you'll have problems. Take this from someone who found out the hard way.

Thanks immensely for the help thus far.

One more though: the sponsored sites don't have the sprokets, or else they are named something else. I see they have 'gear sets' for the camshaft and crankshaft; is it perhaps one of these? Also, I have heard that you need new bolts for the tensioners. Any idea where to get these?

I got my bolts from Nissan itself, they were only a few dollars. The "gear sets" should be the sprockets. Cam gear, Cam sprocket, are the same thing. Just different name that's all. You will soon realize that automotive parts have 3 or more names for each individual part. It's annoying but that's the way it is
