I use mobil1, tried the royal purple and it was okay but it was thin. Mobil1 runs smoother IMO, maybe I just like it better.

But thats what I use, API-SM grade and thats about all that matters anymore. Most modern oil brands are just relabeled, its all about the additives.

this was a pretty intertesting thread, amazing the power that the car made once cooled down with the royal purple.

i am currently running royal purple, and ive noticed the vavletrain seems to be alot louder, compared to when i used mobil 1.

Is the valvetrain being louder a good thing? I've heard that royal purple is thinner, which isn't that great, but I'd like to try it out. Where do you get it from, and how much does it cost ya? Also, what weight do you run?

I'm in total agreement, far louder with the royal purple, which i consider a bad thing...

royal purple also has 'magnified photos of bearing surfaces', of course royal purple vs. the leading synthetic and the bearings that used the royal purple are much smoother. I think that's a little scary, because IMO that is a sign of greater friction between the surfaces.

Oil is not designed to be a power booster, it's designed to protect and keep friction, heat and dirt to a minimum. If you care about your engine, use mobil1, if you don't then use the cheapest thing you can find.

I’ve spent the past 30min looking for a link that I’ve seen where a professor at a well known college did a completely independent study of motor oils. The study was in no way affiliated with any company. The professor explained that the college had recently obtained a chemical analyzer and one of its capabilities was the ability to analyze an oils chemical composition including its viscosity and molecular bond.

His study was focused on the important thing about motor oils, which is; how well it maintains its protective qualities by resisting heat and breaking down its viscosity.

I remember some facts about the study:All oils were tested in the same car and subject to the same conditions.

Mobil 1 maintained 80% of its original viscosity at 800miles of normal driving and continued to fall at a slower rate than all others.

All other oils were 50% or under of its original viscosity at 800miles of normal driving, some fell off faster than others.

800 miles seems to be the breaking point at which most conventional oils begin to fail and continue to fall sharply in its ability to protect an engine from friction. The tests were run with a oil analyzer which tested all properties of the chemical composition of the oil before and after the test.

I will still search for that link

There are a couple of good links.First, and for no other reason than to break a few hearts, Mobil 1 is not a true Synthetic. http://www.g35driver.com/forum...43074 Basically Mobil sued Castrol over the right to use the word "synthetic" because Castrol was using a chaper Grade-3 oil when Mobil was using a more expensive Grade-4 base. Mobil lost in court so they said 'screw it, if they're going to use grade 3 base, so will we.' What does this mean? Nothing really.

A good website to check is "Bob Is The Oil Guy" (or BITOG for short)--> http://theoildrop.server101.co...age=0 Alot of gearheads that get off on knowning their oil.

Also, if you wanted to know how well the oil is holding up in YOUR motor, you can contact these guys--> http://www.blackstone-labs.com/ They provide you with an oil sampling kit, you take the oil and record the milage, send it in, and for like $20 they'll send you back an oil analysis. Based on the amount of metals in it, you can tell which parts may be failing inside the motor. They can also tell you how the oil is holding up in your motor so may be able to go longer between oil changes (or change it sooner). When you get results back, you can post on BITOG and they will tell you what it all means.

As far myself, I made the switch from conventional oil to Mobil 1 a thousand miles ago. I started burning a bit of oil at higher RPM at REALLY HOT temps, so I will probably switch to a thicker oil (like Greddy GR-2 which is 5w-40) in another thousand miles.

After reading that thread, my initial reaction was...wow I better switch to royal purple for performance. I even put it on my list of things to do this saturday. Then I thought about it....Why would oil allow you to rev higher and produce more power? Because it lubricates better? Becasue its thnner therefore creating less drag? If it is creating less drag, does that mean its not protecting as well? If it is not protecting as well does that mean it breaks down easier? Or maybe its just really thin oil that lubricated really well.....That dyno run is just a nice to know, not scientific or a controlled experiment.too many unknowns...oil is meant to protect your engine and its longevity, I guess if i was building motors with 10 hours of run time, I would run something that might give me an edge....If i want my SR to last me a long time of enjoyment, im staying with the tried and true...Mobil Synthetic

mobil-1 10w30 seems to be the #1 choice. Thats what I use just to be on the safe side: it's a reliable/proven oil. Just b/c you make more power with another oil doesn't mean its good for your engine. Another oil which may be worth researching is quaker state. They have a new synthetic oil designed for turbo cars and from what I've heard its actually some decent **** for half the price you'd pay for mobil-1. Quaker state tends to get a bad name b/c its a wal-mart oil, but in all fairness its some good cheap stuff. Their turbo oil is rather new so I'll wait for some more reviews be4 I start using it. My dad runs regular quaker state in his 82' ford truck and that thing has run like a champ since be4 I was born.

0.29$ a QT. Recycled Ultra spiffy lube Motor Oil

FTW

I just thought I would join the group of morons who name an oil without giving a reason why they use it.
