Car: 2004 Infiniti G35

I'm a new owner of a 2004 G35 with manual transmission. One Infiniti dealership said I should only use Nissan oil filters. Is he an idiot or is he correct. If the former what are some other premium brands of oil filter I can use? Will any of these choices help with performance and fuel economy?

What are some of the best synthetic engine lubricant choices?
