Years back I was using one of these as a giant mousepad temporarily. I ended up really liking it, but it wasn't mine, so I couldn't keep it. Anyway, recently I got sick of using painter's masking tape over the worn and bubbled veneer of my cheap walmart desk and decided to buy myself one.

It's a self healing rotary cutter mat. You can find them at craft stores. They're kind of pricey (the 18x24'' one I bought was $50) but they're very very resilient and the surface texture is absolutely PERFECT for use as a mousing surface. But the best part is that they can be had in very large sizes. Even "gaming" mousepads are positively puny. I have my rotary mat sitting on the right side of my desk, with my monitor and keyboard partially on top of it. The entire right side of my desk is now a perfect mousing surface. And it won't wear like veneer (or the painter's tape I'd been using over the worn veneer). It's easy to clean, has no seams, isn't cloth so it doesn't absorb liquids. Perfect.

The rubber the mat is made out of does kinda stink for the first couple of days, though.

I just flipped mine over so the non-demarcated side is up.

Wow this is interesting. Do these things really have "self healing" properties? Maybe I am just retarded but I have never heard of these things.

My wife uses them for scrap booking and she runs all kinds of sharp s*** over hers. Weird material for sure....

I use one for modeling and other small crafts. Small cuts heal, but it's certainly possible to cut them so that they won't "heal". They're expensive for a mousepad but far cheaper than replacing a tabletop.
