I am in the market for a new graphing calculator for college and the rest of high school. I plan on taking calculus and whatever in HS/College.

I have a TI83 that I got for free (dont ask), and I was thinking on the lines of a TI89. Anyone got suggestions?

TI89. It calculates derivatives and integrals. And you can play Zelda.

haha, its the zelda that seals the deal. the TI89 is the highest you can go before they get banned. the Ti91 and the like are not allowed for most classes.

Yeah that's true. Anything over an 89 was banned for my calculus classes.

I'm an HP guy myself. Not sure what the current offerings are, but the 48GX was the bomb in my day. I still have it and use it several times a week. Just not to play games...that's what the PC and the Clie are for.

I was wondering if anyone else uses like HP (daedalus), casio, etc...

I like TI as there is a bunch of "aftermarket" support...

The TI-89 is a nice calculator, and it does integrals symbolically instead of graphically (in other words, you'd get almost exactly the same answer as if you did it by hand, whereas the TI-83 is usually a little bit further off), and it can calculate antiderivatives. The thing with the 89 is that a few functions take longer to access, so if you're used to a 83 and you take the AP Calc test with a 89, you'll spend a lot of your time trying to figure it out, heh. :-) Not to mention the fact that most integrals and antiderivatives aren't too hard to do anyway (please don't challenge me, heh, I'm 2 days away from my AP calc exam).

But, if you do get familar with the 89, you might find life a lot easier, with less to remember . . . ;-)

Right now im getting an A in math knowing about 60% of everything without a calculator. TI-89 takes alot of the thinking out, especially if you take the time to learn the shortcuts. Most notable I remember Matrixes ( or was it Matrices), anyways, I remember that was the most tedious work ive ever done, but once I found out how to do it with the 89 it was cake.

Agreed... Basiclal my math grade depends on if I can do it on the graphing calculator or not...

With trig and TI83 thats becoming limited.

HOLY CRAP i didnt know one could do so much with Sin, Cos, and Tan!!!!!

Get the 89. I made that investment 2 years ago and haven't regretted it since (took me from pre-cal all the way through calcII)

There are forums out there devoted to calculators! Who would've imagined? Some people own both brands and give their feedback:

I have the TI-86. Ive never had any problems with it. Ive gone through all my math classes and its held out with good reliability. I would recommend it, but if you wanna upgrade, go with the 89

My friend has a TI86 and that thing is so old and confusing it would be a downgrade from my 83

TICalc.org is the **** for calculator stuff. And John, I have an RPN program on my 89, makes things very very easy.

Ugh, I messed around with my friend's 89 for a few minutes, and I couldn't figure out anything. Also, who the hell needs folders in a freaking calculator?

I'm still rocking my TI-86 from high school. It's pretty much the same thing as the 83, you can pretty much interchange them.

im in high school and the only one worth buying (for high school) is the ti83 cause everything is taught on it, so if you have an 86 or 89 your screwed and cant follow along with any thing. also the 89 is banned on ACTs.i think on the 89 you can do a alot more functions though.

Is it from the ACTs? I know above 89 is banned on SATs, so id assume it would be the same for ACTs.

You dont need one of the game boy looking TIs!! Thats just overkill IMO.My first calculator was the TI81. I stepped up to the TI82 when I started college. They were similar enough that the change over was a breeze.I guess the TI83 is the base model now. I think this would serve you well. Anything above that is just full of extra features you may not use.I remember when drawing a picture on a calc was a big deal. Now you can play Zelda?? Awww, get the 89 so you have something to do between classes.

Im almost positive that the ti83 is banned because you can do quadradic formulas... i think thats what they are... ne thats just what i remember. also since everyone has the ti83 everyones got the games, and you cant move them from the 83 to anything else.At high school theres like a game cartel.

You can do quadratic equations (using the quadratic formula) on the TI-83. I have a program that does this.....

True, but it gives a nonexact answer.
