I kind of go the other way. As long as the sound is pleasant enough, volume is desirable. Especially with a motor like the VH, which really doesn't make unpleasant sounds unless you muck something up. The point of an exhaust mod (for sound, anyway) is for the driver to enjoy it.
I wish my Q's exhaust note was louder. The sound itself is perfect but I want to be able to hear it more. It's bystanders, of whom 99% of whom don't even know to appreciate the sound, who get to enjoy it the most. But I'm the one who cares the most...I should get to enjoy it, too. And I do...but not to the extent I'd like.
My dad's truck is really loud. But it's such a wonderful deep silky burble that it's not intrusive or bothersome. You can hear it coming a block away, even in the house. But it's not annoying...even standing right next to the tailpipe with the truck idling, you can hold a conversation. And you can hear it even driving at freeway speeds, quite clearly, a nice soundtrack. But it doesn't interfere with music or conversation, even with the windows down.Because it's not volume that makes the sound pleasant or unpleasant, it's the tone and quality of the sound. If it's a good sound, more is better. If it's a bad sound, more is not better at all.
But even though an exhaust note is for the driver, it should also be for that 1% of people who will appreciate it. When I hear my neighbor's 396 El Camino drive by, I appreciate the sound. And he knows it. And that's why it's loud. But it's not a Civic so it's not annoying. People don't look around and wonder who the jackass is making that stupid noise. Most people don't even notice, because the deep note is nonintrusive. But I notice...and I appreciate.
