Hi I got a 85 300zx NA and I want to swap out the engine in 4-5 months Im planning on putting in a RB25DET but What about the a VG30DETT I know the both can be done and will cost about the same give or take $400What I want the most is a RB26DETT but... there mucho $$$ The RB25 is still considered a skyline engine right and with the right tunning it could be a nice little engine. I just dont know what to do Id like some input thanks.

Best bang for the buck is to put turbo parts on the NA motor. Followed by putting a turbo motor in (with turbo parts attached...lol). Which is followed by a small block Chevy V8. The RB is pretty far down that list. The VG30DE(TT) might be a bit cheaper than the RB, but only because of availability (of a VG30DE at least) compared o the RB and RB parts.

Why someone would want to put a VG30DE(T, TT) into a Z31 is beyond me, they must have never worked on a Z32, or any VG30DE-equipped car, in their entire life. Now the RB is actually pretty damned easy to work on, and you'd have lots of space on each side for maintenance. Putting it in almost certainly requires relocating the radiator for clearance though.

The RB does have the wow factor, and besides being much more stout than the VG30DE, sounds 31576789249446.356 times better than the VG.

Chances are that you would be more than happy with just a turbo'd VG30E though.

VG30ET FTW, mine put den 315 whp and 416 lb ft of torque at teh wheel, with the slightly larger turbo it should be a bit better than that, the VG30DETT is overengineered and a PITA and everything costs twice as much, the RB's are a PITA due to the limited availbulity of some parts, and the initial cost, they also move the center of gravity forward.

the VG30ET doesn't get the attention of the other motors but it should, it's a fantactic engine, with tons of potential

the jag V12 is kinda underpowered, it's been done in the S30, not int he Z31 to my knowledge, the beemer V10 would be a better radical swap imho, but still nto worth the drama unless you happen to have one laying around

Yeah I read That to make 400hp on this motor all i have to do is upgrade the turbo. The rb26dett is like 3500.00 and I can get a rb25 for around 1600.00-1800.00 with 5 speed manual trans and all wiring basically a its engine swap ready. All I have to do is have a custom drive shaft made and I want to have my frame renforced. All in all should be like $2500.00-$3500.00 depending on what I want but Im pretty sure I want a skyline motor (Im mean come on). I think Im gonna go with the RB25DET and upgrade the hell out of the engine and make it look perty

p.s. I want to buy a new engine lift hoist whatever you want to call it any good brands for cheap thats anyone know of and recomends. thanks

to get 400 hp form an RB you need injectors, turbo, computer and intercooler, the exact same items you need to get 400 hp form the vg30et, only the cost of admission for the rb is a whole lot more

$20 says you never finish the RB swap. They never do. Most never even get started.

The VG30ET is like a $2 whore. It's not very pretty, it's awkward, and at times it just doesn't smell good. But it's main advantage is the cost...

Think how much fun you can have with a twenty dollar bill!
