I am wondering if there is an engine swap that will let me keep my 4wd transmission.

I only know for sure of an adapter that lets a 700R4 bolt to a D21 V6 4wd transfer case, the same company (4x4parts.com) also sells motor mounts for Buick V6 and Chevy 4.3 V6/Small Block V8's. Not sure if an SR20 belhousing will bolt to the 4wd FS5W71C or not, but I thought I remember reading about a 4wd SR20 somewhere a while back--not sure though.

You can look into turbocharging the KA24 that is in there now if you want more power. I like the idea of a turbocharged 4wd, but it would have to be almost lag free so when it is in low-range it won't have sharp boost spikes (and maybe broken parts) when crawling slowly over gnarly terrain. Or if lag free is elusive with a larger sized turbo, an adjustable boost controller might help with low speed throttle modulations. Then again, you might not care about low range crawling; then I guess it wouldn't be a big deal. But the 4cyl 4wd 5 speed transmission will break if you flog it enough--not a pretzel, but not bulletproof.

I am also a big fan of a turbo 4wd. I just dont know if it would be easier to swap my engine, or get a turbo. I just want more power, and an daily driver that I can have some fun with when the time comes. I have lots of maintenance to work on before I add a turbo, or new engine completely.

If you do a turbo--don't just slap one on and go--you need to do it right.

i drove a 4x4 extended cab hb with a sr20 swapped in, it was nice and there was no lag. it was the 220hp version, bolted to the stock transmission. worked great even in the sand in 4wd

if you wanted to do the sr20det swap the bellhousing is different but you can swap the front part of the case on a silvia transmission to yours and you'll have to move the drivers frame mount 35mm forward for starters and also have to deal with driveshaft lengths.
