current options (price between 1 and 2 grand) FOR STANDALONE SYSTEMS

apexi, haltech, AEM, HKS, reytech

my goal is to build the most absolutely responsive SR I can possible pull off without extensive mechanical redesign.

I want FULL or ALMOST FULL power by 3000 RPM. yes. I know how difficult and expensive that will be.

I know that it will absolutely REQUIRE cams, new turbo, injectors, head work, etc. Those are all given, and I knew that already....

I know that this goal will require a powerful tuning system. certainly not attainable with a piggyback.

so I will ASSUME that the haltech is my best bet. after that I would assume that the best would be the AEM, followed by Apexi, follwed by HKS.

the reytech is probably the best system, but is the most difficult system to work with (no support, not as common so less tuning experience, etc)

let me say one thing:

I am not some idiot kid dreaming.... I may not have thousands of posts, but I know what I am talking about to a degree. We have already installed the SR. It runs great. It has some basic mods. ****, it is even REGISTERED IN CALI!!!! (smogged FTW).

and yes. I did lurk.... the threads discussing this topic usually the strengths of 1 over another, or are a free for all "review" with no common point of view.

please take me seriously. i would like the opinion of someone who is not trying to sell me something before i go and drop 4500 on parts.

BTW: sorry if I come off as a d!ck.

I know how annoying it is when little high school kids come on here and start spouting bull**** about their "cars" that dont exist, asking about installing sr20vets in their 240, etc.

I know that my post kind of sounds like that, but it shouldnt.

again, I may not be a nissan technician with years of experience, but I did spend a summer spelunking around in my engine bay, installing an sr20 and tons of supporting mods in my 2nd s13 with the help of a toyota mechanic friend, so I am not a TOTAL idiot. I also know plenty about mechanical systems. I may not be an ME, but I am a trained scientist, and I know how engines work...

thanks.

Pick a really good tuner to work on your car, ask him what he like to use, then buy that. If a tuner isn't up to speed on a particular system your not going to get the best results with it no mater how powerful it is.

As far as having all of your power by 3000rpm, it will never happen unless you detune everything past 3000. Power is a function of torque and engine speed, and you just can't cheat the laws of physics.

OP,

Your question is really not about engine management as all of those systems will get you the 300wtq as long as you find the proper person to tune with them. The problem you are going to have is supporting mods. I am assuming your budget is more than 2k and you are only looking with that for the engine management. If so, then I have seen some pretty good tunes with the power FC -D-jetro and the AEM unit.

just out of curiosity, what are you expecting your entire budget to be?

my EXPECTED budget is ~4.5k.

it might go up to 5000.

this is for:

cams ~550 (poncams)springs ~200 (BC)Headwork~ 500 (could be less) (valve work, decking, may just skip it)tune ~700 (could be less) (I live in socal... I am sure finding a tuner will not be a problem)management ~1500 (I had always assumed the apexi was best for my needs, but I have heard bad things about support)turbo ~1100 (somewhere between a disco potato and a gt2871R, probably not the latter)cam gears ~300wideband setup ~350

it adds up to more than 5000, but I plan on squeezing every penny by purchasing used gear whenever it is appropriate.

I really do realize that my goals are difficult to achieve.

I have high hopes.

I believe full torque (300) is possible by 3500 rpm, with 85-90% near 3000 with the mods I have listed..

I will make the claim that tuning will be the most important part of the build.

I have a feeling I will need to get it tuned by MASTER tuners, which may be difficult.

luckily there is no short supply of SR tuners in california.

and luckily I can drive my car to get it tuned (smogged w00t!)

you shouldnt have any problems making 300 ft/lbs. of torque...Hell my car makes 253 ft/lbs and its pretty much stock...You should shoot for 400!!

Here is a dyno chart of a gt2871r that makes a little over 400 whp. It's probably about the limit before you get out of the 28 body turbos and into something a little less responsive. 300 tq is around 5k rpm. if you want it by 3500rpm your going to need a LOT more.
