Hi everyone,

Been a few months since posting here, but I have been watching some cool threads about some mods I want to do soon. I am still workless so the cash flow is low, but I have found a few small, cheap mods to keep me busy till work picks up around here.

So the one I am working on now is footwell lighting. I spent the last hour or so digging thru old posts and even the FSM and havent really found anything usefull. So pardon if this has been asked before, but Ill just cut to the chase.

I got some Ozium strip LEDS and stuck them on the edges of the plastic trim pieces in the foot well. I want the lights to opperate the same way the dome/courtesy lights do. that is, come on and shut off when the dome light does when you enter or exit the car. Im sure a lot of people have done this, or atleast tapped something into that circuit. Any suggestions?

I know I could tap the dome, or the maps, or the puddle lights in the doors, but I am hoping there is somewhere a bit easier to tap these into, any ideas?

Thanks!

Might want to reconsider that idea.... I have them as well as several other people hooked up to rocker switches the problem you will run into.... Is that late night maybe a little tired and a cop pulls you over, asks you to get out of the car....9 out of 10 times your getting a ticket for that, so its up to you I thought about this idea but I get pulled over way to much for it to be realistic...

thanks for the input on that. I think it would be a bit odd to get a ticket for footwell lighting. As far as I know, and at least in my state, there are no laws against a such thing, and I did work in law enforcement about 10 years ago. Plus there are a handfull of car models that come with them stock. I know all my mom's Caddy's have had them, iv'e seen some Buicks with them, fords, Chryslers, and if I recall propperly, the 280ZXs i worked on in the mid 90's had them, of course those were white, incandecent lamps in a factory opening.. but I still don't see why it wouldn't be legal either way?

Oh ok ive always been told by my Ahole cops here that its illegal because its a distraction for the driver.... but you may be right. As far as tapping in. I would splice a wire and solder you leds wire to one of the existing lights. For instance the door lights are one option just run some wires to it. All you have to do is take off the interior part of the door. Ps I think there is a thread about it on the tech page.

I could see where they might be a distraction if the were on when driving, but your courtesy lights come on only when you open a door to get in, or shut your car off to get out. They turn off a few seconds after you start your engine. They would however come on with the engine on if you open a door, you could tell the cop they are just courtesy lights.. but then again, some are just A-holes, but if you had to take it to traffic court, it wouldn't stick... at least in WA state.

Yea, I prolly will just have to tap the door "puddle" lights, I was just hoping someone would have done this or something like it that could point me in an easier/quicker direction.. thanks for the advice!

I got the Ozium strip LEDS as well and I purchased a switch, dual cigarette lighter outlight and drilled a hole on the inside of my center console storage area for the switch. I did this so I could very easily uninstall them if needed and also have more control over when they come on and off via my switch.

As for if it's illegal, I had never heard of this? I'm in TX and I drive around with my windows down when they're on and have been right next to Cops and been just fine. Although I guess it depends on how bright yours are? I suppose if you're illuminated as if you're in a flood light then it could be an issue. Mine aren't crazy bright and the ones that are, are directional and pointed to the ceiling or in my back seat.

there's a bunch of wires in the A-pillar that controls the dome light which can be tapped into. you just have to know which wires to tap, racingline has a kit with instructions on which ones to tap

If you want to tap the courtesy light circuit to hook up anything to turn on/off as the courtesy lights do, it is: White with red stripe=(+) White with 2 silver bars (-). You must hook up the hot to the hot and the ground to the neg. If you ground to the chassis, you will only have constant "on" function, the lights will always be on. If you want the auto courtesy light on/off function you must connect both wires!

These wires can be found in the "A Pillar" on the front drivers side. They run up the pillar, thru the roof area and to the map light unit.

i recently purchased the racingline footwell front/rear/switch kit in blue... i'll try to post pics tonight if i remember...

pretty easy install; the only problem was tapping into the A-pillar column since the wiring was so tiny.

I just posted my version of the instructions to do this. They may not be the same, but it works perfectly and wasnt hard to do at all.

Anyone know if there is a place to plug into the body control module?
