Exedy Stage 2 from Phase2. Not heavy pedal and sticky as heck.

If you want it to last a while and not chatter, DO NOT get the exedy. For a street car that you want some lifetime out of the clutch, avoid a puck style clutch at all costs.

Get a full face disc. That said, I've had good luck with the ACT Street Disc and the Spec Stage 2 (or 1) on multiple SR's.

The RPS clutch kit that Phase2 is selling is a good clutch for a mildly modified SR20. The pedal feel is identical to stock.

I've heard the street organic clutches won't last that long then a pucked one... so it all comes down to whose had experience with them... anyone??

I've yet to see a pucked clutch last more than 12-15K miles. I blew through a South Bend 6 puck in about 12K miles on my old galant VR-4. I've seen an exedy 3 puck last less than 10K miles on a local's car, and I've seen multiple Spec 3 & 4's last in the 15K range.

I've seen full faced organic discs last forever. I put about 15K on an ACT 2600 full face disc on my galant after the south bend clutch died. The new owner of the car has at least 10K more miles and it's holding up strong.

Remember my galant experience is a 300+ hp AWD car that I launched at least once a day

DOH! Hmm... how come this is the first I've heard of this. If this is true, looks like I'll be changing my clutch in 2 years, oh well.

My guess: most people who own 240's think that the exedy 3 puck and other clutches are JdM TyTe y0!!! and won't recognize the inherent problem with using a puck style clutch on a street car.

Puck style clutches are basically an on-off switch...nowhere near as progressive as a full face disc. Because of this, they hold better, but you can't slip them. Even though you may not realize it, every time you pull away from a light, move from any stop, etc., you are slightly slipping the clutch (unless you just rev it up to 2K and dump the clutch). This slight slipping day by day is absolutely horrible for a puck style clutch since they're not resistent to slipping. A full face disc has no problem with it what-so-ever.

Yeah, my Stage II doesn't slip at all. Also, because the pressure from upgraded clutch, I had to replace my master/slave/upgraded to braided SS hose.

Don't get me wrong...I'm not saying puck clutches are band. In fact, they generally have a much higher holding force and will put up to a higher level of abuse.

They just won't last as long. For a pure track car or a weekend car (i.e.; not a daily driver) they are awesome.

I'm running a Spec 3 6puck on my car which is basically a night/weekend car at the moment and will be a dedicated track car once I buy my truck in a few months.

msaskin... I didn't exactly get the 3 puck because it was JDM Tyte... I just heard it grips really well which it does, didn't know it was only gonna last around 10k miles.

Oh well, next clutch will be ACT.

I wasn't referring to you. There are a few locals who have bought the exedy clutches (for example) because (and I quote) "it's JDM so it has to be better". That was their exact quote in response to seeing me installing my ACT (previously) and my SPEC (now)

I see, anyway, it was cool that you cleared all this up, I guess I should of asked this question before I went ahead and buy a clutch - something I knew little about.

I didn't know Exedy was JDM, doesn't sound too JDMish. Anyhow, the Exedy Stage II does NOT like to slip FYI. Very harsh and hard to get around in bumper to bumper traffic.

Yep, I can second that. Took me almost 3 weeks to get used to it.

http://www.exedy.co.jp y0!!!

Yeah, puck clutches don't like slippage. They're almost an on-off switch When you do slip them they chatter like crazy and vibrate a whole bunch.

big fan of Spec stage 2. bro had his SR for almost 3 years now, with the original Spec clutch at the time of the swap. 280hp and he beats the living piss out of his 240 every day. the clutch is still holding very strong to this day. 3 years of abuse, damn. after my excedy gives out, Spec will def be my next clutch.

Any recommendations for a pressure plate and flywheel?

I like matching pressure plate + discs, so if you go SPEC, get the full SPEC kit, if you go ACT, etc., etc.

As for flywheel, I'd say it depends on what turbo. Anything up to a Big28 in size and I'd get a lightweight flywheel, probably the SPEC for price reasons. With a bigger turbo I think a lightened flywheel is detrimental due to revs dropping below your boost threshold while shifting.

Ah, thanks. Just have the stock T28 and most likely will be keeping it that way. I think I'll go with the ACT street clutch kit next w/ the XACT flywheel.
