Hi there, The ignition system in my '92 240 is starting to fade quickly. I'v checked everything and I still get slight mis-fires at idle from my coil/plugs. I'm looking for suggestions on a replacement transistor/coil pack. The MSD's are nice, and 'time-proven', but it's a little expensive for my budget right now. Considering the stock ignition is *supposed* to hold up very well under light boost, I'm just looking for something a notch up from stock. Possibly Crane ignitions? Preferably something smaller(physically) than the MSD, and with good performance. Is this possible for, say, less than $1-120? Also a good set of plug wires that won't break the bank.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Well if you are just looking for the coil, you can get a MSD for well under 100 bucks I think I picked mine up from summit for like 50 bucks shipped. But if I was you and you don't want to go OEM. Id go with a full MSD setup. IMO I think they have the best prices for good proven quality parts.

You can get the MSD coil 6al, for around 20-25 bucks shipped from ebay, for brand new, and just find some 8.5mm wires by either ngk or msd, i believe that would hold it up

In combination with an upgraded coil, my rewiring modification works pretty well.-->Click here<--

wow, I didn't even check ebay, they really go that cheap? Now the 6al is a replacement for the power transistor, correct? That box is just so damn big.

Cory, I'v read that article before, and will make sure my wiring is up to par also when I upgrade.

you must have meant the coil, because those are around $30 on ebay.

I'm looking at a crane system now: ignition box+coil for aound $190. Not too shabby.

How are Mallory products?

MSD/Crane CD ignition boxes don't replace the power transistor. The power transistor rarely fails.

I have a Crane HI-6 with a LX92 coil waiting to go in; IMHO the crane CDI's are much better than the MSD equivalents which is why i went with the crane.

Yeah I know that everyone likes the MSD units, but I like to break out of the mold every once and a while. Rev limit is pretty much standard on the Cranes', with MSD you have to get the 6AL.

They are comparable in price, the 6al+blaster coil and the crane HI-6 w/coil. Crane has more e-core coils to chose from also (they tout better performance over an oil-filled canister stlye coil).

This is the least important thing to me, but it's nice to know you can get a crane in something other than 'MSD Red'.

My decision for going with the crane setup was:- 500mA spark output with the LX92 coil and HI-6- 2 stage limiter- price- digital design over MSD's analog setup.
