I have just purchased a 2007 M45. The ride is rough. I feel every bump in the road. Can I upsize on the standard rim tire size 245/40/19 with no tire rub for a better ride?

You might have bought the wrong car.

Try PS2 on it. Not inexpensive, but great performance and great ride for a low profile tire.

I just got a set of 245/40/19 Eagle GTs mounted this morning, after tirerack effed me over on the Michelin PS A/S.

Only have about 50 miles on them, but the noise level is acceptable. A little improvement over the RE050A. Not as aggressive with turn in as summers, but still sporty. Paid $800 for 4 from http://www.discounttiredirect.com

Could not find anything all-season that had good reviews for a better price.

I noticed many people actually buy from tire Rack due to their prices being so low. Did you know that most competitive tire shops will price match Tire Racks tire prices??This would eliminate the hassles over purchasing and warranty issues from a mail order tire store.

It sounds like you purchased the M45 sport pkg version. The dead give away is the 19" wheels. That is, as long as they are the original wheels. The Sport M cars ride very ridged and tight. It has a sports car suspension under it basically. The base version rides a bit rough at times too, but very is very forgiving at the same time.I cant really see a different tire really giving you a totally different ride my friend. Your best bet would be like the above mentioned of swapping with someone that has the factory 18" wheels, or buy an aftermarket set of 18's and matching tires. That would suppress some of the harsh ride, but not eliminate it.

Like Maxnix stated, "You might have bought the wrong car". If you cannot live with the Sport model's ride..... you might want to sell it and buy the base model. I love the ride of my base model M45!

When my factory GDY Eagle RS-A wear out, I too will be purchasing the Michelin PS2's. I've never owned a set, but I see they have good reviews.Plus, I have never owned a set of Michelin tires that let me down!

Agreed! There is no doubt that Michelin makes excellent tires ... they are the best in terms of truly making their load-index ratings (testing properly), etc., and have introduced many innovations in tire manufacturing (such as X-raying as a quality measure, etc.)

However, there are a few models from them that I would not pick. Not because they are bad tires, but mostly because they are not well-suited to our cars and not as good as others in their lineup. The Michelin MXM is an example of what I speak. Some of their touring tires are so-so as well.

Also, I disliked their (now discontinued) Michelin Pilot XGTV that they came out with as a replacement for the older Michelin XGTV - the OEM tire for the 1990 Infiniti Q45. This tire rode well and handled well in dry, but was downright white-knuckle scary in wet weather ...

BTW, depending on how many miles you have on your current RS-A tires, you may be waiting a while to replace them! They are long-wearing tires (their only redeeming feature, IMHO). Frankly, I would replace them soon - the problems (tramlining, wet weather braking, etc.) more than justify getting rid of them sooner rather than later.

Well, I would replace them now, if I had the spare change to throw at them right now. Being it is just after the holidays and putting $15,000 down on my new to me 07' M45....I'm a bit strung out on spending any more money right now.I've only owned the car for a week now anyways. This is mainly my wifes car, so it is usually driven at moderate speeds and slow take offs. I would say there is about 1/2 of the tire tread remaining. The car now has just under 19,000 miles on it. I would say they will be needing replacement between 30K and 40K mi. That is as long as I dont drive it too much!

Speaking of the tires.... I just remembered they need to be rotated! I recall inspecting them and seeing that the front tires had slightly rounded shoulders in the inside and outsides of the tires. The rears were flat as a board across the entire tread patch!

A good and cheaper alternative to Michelins is yokohama s.drive. Michelins PS2 did not do well in tread life in consumer reports and they are 50% more expensive. I have always used Michelins but this time I will try yokohamas.

The spring stiffness [1000-1800 pounds per inch] of a tire is mostly a function of sidewall height. A 19" wheel only leaves room for 3.5 " of tire whereas a 17" leaves another inch from wheel to road............................28% SOFTER from this factor alone.

The smallest diameter wheel that will clear brake rotors/calipers is the ideal for ride.

Why does NASCAR still use 15" wheels [not to say that is ideal] but it functions pretty well.

two thoughts -- someone asked about tire dealers that "match" tire racks pricing. I've been using a local "Discount Tire" store for 20 years. Keeping in mind that the price you pay for a tire at Tire Rack does NOT include mounting and balancing, you'll need to ADD that to the cost per tire when comparing true costs. So, when I purchased my Yoko Avid W4S tires, I took the Tire Rack price, added about $20 per tire for mounting and lifetime balancing and asked the store manager to meet that price. He ALWAYS does. Just bring in the Tire Rack printout or ad from the magazine. Discount always rotates my tires for free, rebalances them for free and stands behind the tires they sell. A win-win.

Now as for WHAT tires, I'm beginning to sound like a Yoko salesman... I have always been a "Michelin Man" too -- until I installed the Yoko Avid W4S on my M45 -WOW! Quiet, grips like velcro in dry and wet, and they are wearing amazingly well. These have a MUCH better wear rating than the SDrives and I can't imagine, in street driving, that any performance differential would be noticable (assuming there even is one). Check 'em out.

No thanks on that tire. That tire is known for radial pulls. When you get about 1/4-1/2 tread worn off, you may or may not find this out. Hopefully you will not. I had two sets of these on my past 2005 Mustang GT that kept getting the same results. The tires were warrantied out and the next set began doing the same thing 10 to 12mo down the road. Yes, I had the alignment performed by Firestone and then by Ford. Both agreed to it being related to the tires.Maybe I had some bad batches, I dont know. Yokohama has been using that tread design for quite some time now. I couldn't see why they would net these kind of issues over a long term tire tread history. They also didn't have good dry weather traction either. They really only shined in the rain. I have no idea how well they would do in the snow.I've never tried Firestone, Pirelli, Dunlop, or Hankook tires.I have not had luck with Goodyear, BFG, Uniroyal, Sumitomo, General Tire, or Yokohama. I have had good luck with tires on cars with: Michelin, Bridgestone, and oh one sub brand of Goodyear (Eagle ResponsEdge).I have good luck with these tires on trucks: Michelin, Kumho (20"), and amazingly, Continental tires (they lasted a long time and rode decent).I'm sure there are those that will get a badly reviewed tire and love them. Then at the same time someone will get a highly recommended reviewed tire and dislike them. Sometimes it can come down to getting good or bad batched tires.

Good personal experience observations, thanks!

My personal experience with Goodyear is that their Eagle F1 GS-D3 is an outstanding tire. I would recommend it heartily in a heartbeat and plan to consider them again for the next set on my car. Conversely, I would never use their Eagle RS-A - this is a mediocre to poor tire!

In the Firestone lineup, my experience with their (unfortunately now discontinued) Firehawk SZ50-EP was most excellent. This was one of the finest tires I have ever used in 30+ years of driving - as good as the Eagle F1 GS-D3 in most ways and better in others. However, as mentioned, it is no longer available. Their Wide Oval is supposedly a replacement model for the SZ50-EP, but I have not tried it (not available in the size I need).
