Perhaps you misunderstand what I was saying.
A.) Yes, I know you must remove the front cover to access the crank sprocket. :rolleyes However, my point is that you don't need to do anything to the crank sprocket & front cover during a head gasket job. All you had to do is remove the chain & sprocket from the camshaft, and support the chain so as it doen't fall down and loose it's place on the camshaft sprocket. Then simply reinstall the head and new gasket and connect the chain back onto the camshaft.
B.) When I said things are apart, I meant valve cover was off, timing chain isn't connected, probably vacuum and coolant lines aren't connected yet so it's not that much of a hassle to just unbolt the head again and check for damage.
