Bent Valves???

Information on the naturally-aspirated KA24E and KA24DE engines.

After getting my new haead gasket installed I obviously had to take my front cover and everything off to get my timing chain back on. Well like an idiot I installed my head before taking my crank pully off. Well when getting the crank pully nut off my engine did turn over a little bit. Though this did happen quite slowly. I was wondering if on th eoff chance my piston moved enough to hit my valves (since I didn't have the timing chain connected the valves/camshaft didn't turn at all) would it still bend the valve even though the crank was turning slowly? Also I installed the head useing the old head bolts, and have since decided to install new head bolts. Can I just take the old head bolts out (in order) and replace them with new ones. Or will I need to replace the gaskets also since the pressure will be relieved after taking the head bolts out??Ryan

the best thing to do is take the head off and inspect everything.

Why would you need to take the front cover off in the first place? You remove the chain from the camshaft by way of the camshaft sprocket. That's all. You have to just to support the chain and make sure it doesn't fall down. Then you just reinstall the head, line up the chain with the cam sprocket markings.

But yea, since things are apart now, remove the head and check for damages. Remove the crank pulley when the head is off, but get #1 back to TDC. You need a new head gasket.

A: You have to take the front cover off to gain access to the cranshaft gear.B: Things are not apart now, they are back together, only the front cover is off.

Perhaps you misunderstand what I was saying.

A.) Yes, I know you must remove the front cover to access the crank sprocket. :rolleyes However, my point is that you don't need to do anything to the crank sprocket & front cover during a head gasket job. All you had to do is remove the chain & sprocket from the camshaft, and support the chain so as it doen't fall down and loose it's place on the camshaft sprocket. Then simply reinstall the head and new gasket and connect the chain back onto the camshaft.

B.) When I said things are apart, I meant valve cover was off, timing chain isn't connected, probably vacuum and coolant lines aren't connected yet so it's not that much of a hassle to just unbolt the head again and check for damage.

Actually, everything (IE Both manifolds, fuel injection system, all vaccum lines) is hooked back up but the timing chain. And I had a busted chain tensioner, and guide, so the front cover had to come off.

Cool, your original post made it seem as though this was just a head gasket job and not a timing chain job also.
