I have searched this forum and others and never saw any information on this topic. Since I have ran into the problem of having the wrong spring in my wastegate I wanted a way to bench test the wastegate before ever installing it on my car. I really think that bench testing would take a lot of the guess work out of troubleshooting wastegate failing to open or open at a certain psi. So I have copied an email that I sent to Tial so those of you that want to test their wastegates prior to installation would know how to do it.

----- Original Message ----- To: [email protected] Sent: Monday, January 24, 2005 2:40 PMSubject: Testing Wastegate

The wastegate that I purchased had the wrong spring installed Big Blue 14.5psi . My application requires the small green spring rated at 7.5psi. I have replaced the spring and wanted to know the proper way to test your wastegate. I tried using a tool that applied controled pressure to the air control side port but the valve never opened. I am wondering if something else is wrong.

Thanks for your help.

From: [email protected] To: RobertRobert, The unit when bench testing the pressure to open the unit will be higher because there is no exhaust pressure against the valve. The valve should begin to open around 8psi. tech

What are you using to apply the air to the WG?

His Swedish pen15 Enlarger

Typically you just hook up a hand pump to the signal line and pressurize it.

could i also do this test with my internally wastegated turbo? if so would i just hook up the pump to the line running to the wastegate actuator?

Your *best* bet, if you have [even a small] air compressor is to pressurize the entire system. Even one of those 1gallon jobbies would work. There have been some write-ups here on how to do it, but basically it boils down to this: using a PVC cap the same ID as your piping OD, install an air compressor air fitting in the center and seal it well with teflon tape. Put this cap in place of the filter/MAF and use a low-psi regulator to pressurize the entire system. Get an adjustable regulator and gauge within the range of boost you plan on running, and slowly increast the aircompressor PSI. You'll easily be able to find leaks with the engine off, and will be able to test the wastegate setting at the same time.
