I searched and suprisingly found nothing that helped. Ok, so upon starting the engine I get this ear piercing squeak from my belt(s). I don't habve A/C so only 2. Anyway, are the tensioners the 6 inch long bolts that are on the sides of the alternator and P/S pump brackets? I tried tightening them as much as I could and the belts seem pretty taught but they still squeak. Would they squeak if they were too tight? Also what does belt dressing do? Help!

check the belts for cracks and what not. If they're worn down, they're going to slip. If you over tighten, they'll squeak too. After you've tightened down your belts, push on the belt between some of the pulleys. It should flex a little bit, not too much but still flex a bit. The dressing should help quiet down the belts, but it might just be masking a bigger problem if your belts are old and worn.

180fan: I don't see any cracks or anything on the belts. Do I even have the right bolts? Tightening or loosening them doesn't seem to have ANY effect on the belts and by Quicksilvia's response I must be doing something retarded.

quicksilvia: I'm also low on pneumatic fluid but that's a different story but yeah any help?

Did you have a look at the ribbed section for the cracks and stuff? If it were to appear on the smooth section then yeah you'd have really bad problems with your belts. If the tensioners don't have effect on the belts, then I think it's time to change them and that doesn't take too long either.

Ok, but if I changed them I would still need to know how to tighten them. Could somebody describe the process in detail for me please. I would download the FSM but zeroyon's links don't seem to be working right now.

usually squeeking belts mean they need to be replaced...the amount of tension u put on the belts needs to be about to the point where u can lift up a small amount of slack on the belt (not so its tight to the point where there is no slack but just enough to where u can MAYBE get a 1/4 of an inch lift on it it has to be really minute) but deffinatly try getting some new belts

Sometimes, the pully themselves are cracked. Mine was and it caused my belts to squeak.

By the way, Belt Dressing is this liquid that you spray on the belt surface and it will make it extra tacky.

Hey dude make sure you are loosening the bolt on the pivot point of the pump/alt. For instance when I tensioned my PS belt, you turn the pulley so you can loosen the bolt behind the pulley (through a hole in the pulley itself) and then turned the long adjuster screw. If you don't loosen the pivot then you can turn the adjuster all you want and the pump/alt will not move either way. Try this and let us know.

SR belts loosen like this.

PS belt, there's a bolt you must loosen behind the pulley for the pump in order to get the ps pump to pivot. Then go to the side where you'll see a bolt just poking out on a black surface. Loosen that, and push the pump down. That'll loosen your ps pump belt.

Your AC will have a small pulley with a similar setup to the tensioner on the ps pump. Just loosen the nut on the small pulley, and loosen that long bolt that's perpindicular to the pulley.

Alternator/water pump pulley is from the alternator. Loosen the bolt at the bottom of the alternator and loosen the other nut that's at the top of the alternator and faces the same direction as the pulley for the alternator. Now go to the side of the alternator and you'll see the same rail kind of setup that was on the ac and ps pump. loosen that and push the alternator in towards the head. You'll then be able to install your new belts. Be sure to tighten the nuts/bolts that are facing the same way as your pulley after you've tightened the belts via those long bolts.

Remember to loosen those bolts that face the same direction as your pulleys whenever you adjust/replace your belts. The ps one I forgot to mention, align the two holes on the pulley so that you can see the bolt. It's on the side closest to the head.
