I have a 1999 q45 and the belts need to be changed but before I do this I was just wondering if it's something that a home mechanic can do.

Mind you I already changed all the coils on my own so I think I can do the belts too...

Very easy on a lift.

Be sure to haveas good as OEM new specified bearings on hand to replace any that show any sign of imperfection.

Be sure to complete your profile also.

Bearings? So I guess it's not as simple as loosing the belt tensioner and replacing the belt..

Yes, it is that simple- but be sure to spin the idler pullys by hand while belts are off to check pully bearings for smooth operation. If you feel any resistance or slop, you will need to either purchase new pullys or just the correct bearings and have them pressed into your old pullys.

the pully bearings tend to fail somewhere around 12-15 years or 200K miles, often snapping the belt and leaving you stranded- usually give you advanced warning by squealing noise developing intermittantly, especially in cold weather.

Bearings have failed more frquently in my case.

Any sign of imperfection (i.e. - even noise) is magnified ten fold under tension.

If you like frequent repeat labor, then bearings are not a concern, nor is replacing all the belts at once.
