Hello,

I did try to do a search but i could find too much. My Father just got the timing belt changed and would like to change all the belts in the engine. i have been searching but the information is all mixed up. i plan on ordering the belts from rockauto.com.

the belts they list are:
Air Conditioning
Fan, Alternator and Idler
Power Steering
Compressor
Water Pump and Alternator
Fan and Alternator

i am sure some of these are the same things.

if you could please clear this up and suggest which brand of belts are better and if anything else is needed (Belt installation tool?) i would be grateful.

Thanks in advance.

It looks like you have 3 drive belts. Take a look at page 13 of the Maintenance section of the FSM. I think the fan is mounted to the water pump, if that helps. If you still can't figure out what their site is saying, I'd say give RockAuto a call so you can speak to them directly.

The FSM should also give you a good idea of what you'll need to replace them (sorry, no personal experience with the 3.3). Gates and Continental are always a safe bet for belts. I believe Dayco is pretty reputable as well.

I like the Dayco 'W' belt for older vehicles. I've had a set on the QX4 for a couple of years and they look like new, are silent, and perhaps a bit easier on the bearings. Check all the pulleys with the belt off, if any rattle (sounds like there's gravel inside) when you spin them by hand, replace.

96-00 Pathfinder and QX4's have 4 belts:
-AC compressor belt (easy)
-alternator & water pump belt (easy)
-power steering belt (easy)
-timing belt (difficult)

The FSM that atraudes posted above, is correct. The FSM lists the three easily accesible belts in the maintenance chapter, and the timing belt in the engine chapter (much bigger job, front of engine is taken apart).

If your father just recently had the timing belt changed, then whoever did the work should have offered to replace all the other belts (since they have to be removed and reinstalled anyways) and also water pump/thermostat. If they reinstalled the old belts without offering new ones, then that's a cheap-o shop. Check to make sure you don't already have new belts.

There is no fan belt, fan is driven directly off the crankshaft pulley (with a thermally viscous fan clutch).

The shop i went to for the timing belt job did put in a new water pump, i don't know about a new thermostat. But they put all the old belts back on and now i have to replace with new ones. They didn't even ask me if i wanted to replace the belts at the same time. I don't use that shop anymore. They also broke my radiator fan shroud and tried to put it back together with some sort of adhesive, and lost a bolt to the timing belt cover and the grommet to the bar that holds the hood up. I didn't notice until a few weeks after. They also cut all the wiring harness clips under the hood and didn't replace them. Also lost the cap to my washer fluid reservoir.

Take your cars to a reputable shop.
