Hello all.

A friend of mine with a 92 N/A just presented me with an extremely weird problem. For some reason whenever he reaches around 30 mph, all of his belts fly off. :squint:

He told me that he recently replaced the water pump and that whenever he starts the car, the "fan thingy" as he put it starts rattling and it gets worse until the belts fall off.

To me, it sounds like he didn't tighten the fan clutch on properly or the belts, but before I go tearing into this thing I just wanted to get a second opinion. I haven't had a chance to look at it yet because I've been too preoccupied with my 240, but I'm going to look at it this weekend.

Any other ideas aside from the blantantly obvious?

Check and make sure the pulleys arent bent or damaged in some way, other than that its like you said.

If the fan clutch isn't tightened all the way, the water pump pulley will be sitting crooked and most definitely causing the belt to fall off. And that could do some damage to the water pump over time. But I can't imagine the engine would last long if the belt was off anyways lol
