Ok so I have an s14 with an RB20det that i'm currently doing a rebuild on. My Goal is 450-500whp...

My build setup is going to be as follows...

CP Pistons 78mm 8.5:1 compression ratioARP Head studs, main studs, and exhaust manifold studsCometic multi layer head gasketOem gasket/ seal kitForged connecting rods and crank collar from spool imports AustrailiaACL main and rod bearingsGreddy oil pumpNew oem oil pump and timing kit

This is my first time building a Nissan engine. I'm an Audi technician and working at a new car dealership there's one thing I never had to deal with that im dealing with on my 240 and that's RUST... On my Rb20 This gear...

Is rusted on Ive gotta get if off to install my crank collar, oil pump, and main bearings.

I searched this sites for threads related to this before I posted and I found this...

zerothread/250400

In this thread some of the things they mention would get the lower timing gear off but could damage it...

My question is for people who have built rb engines before. What did you do to remove this gear WITHOUT damaging it.

My snap on guy has a tool similar to this...

I was thinking about trying this, with some pb blaster but i'd have to drill and tap one hole on each side of the gear in order to get this tool to attatch to the gear but before I did that I wanted to get some input or recommendations. Any help would be appreciated

Heres some more pics just for the hell of it...Sorry 56k people

Drill a big hole right above the key way. Make sure you don't hit the crank or key stock. Then take a cold chisel and split the sprocket right above the hole you just drilled. Pull it off, throw it away, and go get a new one.

I would do that but i've gotta find a place that actually has a new one in stock first.

Im not sure. We were told the second quarter of 2009 but I doubt that will happen because we got the 4.2l R8's late and in our Porsche shop when we sold the carrera gt's they came in late too. But you cant get them without a long wait unfortunately. The wait is usually close to a year and theyre normally sold well above sticker price. Your best bet is ebay for getting one sooner.

I just ordered a new one. I got the old one off. I drilled 3 small holes in it opposite of the key way. Wacked it with an air chisel and it came off in about 5 seconds. I was trying to avoid damaging it but s*** happens.

Your shop is very nice looking. Good luck on the build.

I used a Proto gear puller to remove my crank pulley. It came right off after a 1/4 turn. I suppose that I am just lucky - no rust.

Thanks man...Yea, when it came off there was tons of rust on it. I just got the crankshaft out this morning to goto our machine shop to have the crank collar welded on.

Why didnt you just use a torch? Thats what I do every time on customers cars, you dont risk destroying the gear, and it hasnt failed me. Note: dont soak the thing in rust penetrant and then hit it with a torch while the rust penetrant is still on. One of the master techs at our shop did this, and it was incredibly funny, but definately not something you'd want to happen again.

I'm building the engine at my house. And I dont have torch at home. I needa buy one. I use a torch on customers cars too. Audi's have a problem with outer tie rod ends seizing on, theyre the only things that i've ever seen rust on an Audi. Our wheel alignments often involve torches, alot of pb blaster, and new tie rod ends.
