Hola!!!

05 6MT Coupe. Base model. 51k miles.

I've got 3 issues.

The transmission isn't always smooth into all gears. Some time it CLUNKS into gear. Especially when I'm coming to a quick stop and I shift into 1st, if the gate is open, but I'm not completely stopped, it will clunk into gear.

Reading Lights are on the blitz. They turn only some of the time.

I'm getting a whining noise from the engine. I think it's a pulley, but I'm not sure.

Anyone care to shed any light on my issues.

Its under warranty so just let them know of the problems and they'll look into it. As for the whining noise, you're probably right that its a pulley or something with the belt. When was the last time you replaced the belt?

Just bought the car in December with 46k on it, so never. The belts are normally pretty robust, but I'll have them look at it.

Squealing from the idler pulley is kind of common with some cars... not sure about G's. mine has 51k and hasn't had a problem yet.

I bought mine with 41K on it and the belts were making noise so I had Nissan replace them as part of the purchase agreement. I think you are due.

Interesting. I'll look into that. They were very easy replacements on my I30.

the squeeling is likely just the belts...they are very easy to change

the reading light is probably just a bulb on its last leg

Try" Redline MTL" in the transmission. It has improved shifts and quieted trans' for me in the past.It is highly respected in the porsche world. For the intermittent light...check the pin switches on the door jambs.See if You can isolate which one it might be,by trying all the doors.Wiggle each one with Your fingers, to see if the light comes on and off .If You find that it is one of the switches, remove it and inspect for corrosion or bad contact. If You find corrosion, clean it with a small wire brush or scotchbrite, then put a dab of dialectric grease(bulb grease) on it to protect it in the future.Check the light bulbs too.You could have a bad or loose bulb,or have corrosion or a bad contact on the bulb.If You find corrosion ,clean it the same way as I mentioned above. If You have a bad contact, sometimes bending the contacts together so that it squeezes the bulb tighter, will work.A good trick for finding noises ,is to get a piece of wooden dowel about 1/2" in dia. or smaller, and about 3 ft long.Hold one end to Your ear,and the other end to engine parts, and the third end to Your other ear.Just kidding , hold one end to an ear, and touch the other end to the engine, listening for the offending noise.Be careful that it does'nt get caught in rotating parts. It's great for isolating noises. You could do the same with a long screwdriver, but the wood amplifies the noise better, and is safer if it gets caught in something.

I've never heard good or bad about 'redline MTL' but I'm going to throw in my 2 cents. The only thing that belongs in a stock transmission is OEM transmission fluid.

With transmissions there is no majic in a bottle.

i'd agree with Gwoods on this one, at least for our G's

There are a lot of transmission fluids that work great but in our cars i think the NISSAN fluid is the best

Redline MTL is one of the best synthetics on the market for manual transmissions. It is well known, to smooth out and quiet transmission's with shifting and or synchro problems.I have used it for years.

Sorry missed that this was a MANUAL transmission..... put whatever you want in it does not matter. Automatics, unless you have after market frictions and steels run OEM fluid.

Never tried it, don't believe it does anything but placebo. But I wouldn't argue with someone who has one and loves it.

I'll send you one and if you like it, you can pay me, if not, you can sent it back.

Deal?

The light problem is kind of funny. It's probably a bad bulb or connection. The passenger side light turns on and off just fine when it's clicked.

The driver's side turns on most of the time, but not all of the time. I can click it on and off 3 or 4 times without it illuminating.

It's going in today at 1.

Are you sure the noise wasn't coming from that Mustang that is near death?

actually, I replaced the original belt on the cobra at 70K miles and it wasn't making noise and really wasn't in that bad of shape.

And, with the tensioner pulley, it takes less than 5 minutes max to change it with a breaker bar. Unlike the G.

I'm not going to brag about how little I've had to spend on the cobra cause I don't want to jinx it....cause you know it is a Furd!

But, I did replace some dry-rotted vacuum lines which cost me about $1.90

UPDATE

As usual, the dealership couldn't reproduce the shifting noise or the reading light failure (I'll be bringing it back soon).

As for the whining noise, you guys were right. It was the belts. What sad belts only last 50k miles. The ones on my I30 went for over 100k without problem.

The service department did find something interesting though. About 3000 miles ago, I did an oil change and put in 5qts. I was low by 3 yesterday.

Now don't get all mad at me for not checking. I have been, but that damned dipstick is as useful as shining a flashlight down the dipstick tube.

Anyways, they did an oil change and are starting an oil consumption test.

I'll be replacing the belts myself (quoted $192 parts and labor- The belts should be less than $70).

Thanks guys.

Perhaps the belts wear out faster using Premium and Synthetic oil?

Nate, get a quote on your belts at NISSAN. They should beat the INFINITI price. When I did my Pathy, I was surprised at how competitive they were with Autozone. Actually, they were cheaper if I remember correctly. Seems they were about $30 for both.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm going to try my friend at the dealership first before I try Nissan. He's been giving me great deals so far.

If that doesn't work I'll try a Nissan Dealership AND EverythingG35

Telco,

I'm not currently using synthetic. I let the dealership change the oil (and wash my car ) because of the oil consumption.

Once they figure it all out (and I have enough money), I'll swap the whole car over to Amsoil and see how the coupe runs on it. I'm also going to do a few oil tests to see how it's breaking down over the extended change interval.

Once that's done, I'll let you know. One of us will probably be surprised. I'm hoping it's you
