Post

(to quote Barney from the Simpsons---- "Burrrrrrrp")

Wall Street 24/7 just published their list of beers with the largest drop in sales between 2006-2011. A few surprises.

9. Milwaukee's Best Light 36% drop. They called themselves the "leading low calorie beer", but they failed to say what exactly they were leading.

8. Miller High Life Light : 38% drop. MHL is known the "champagne of beers", I guess that made the MHL Light the "champale" of beers. (old guys will remember champale)

7. Amstel Light 48% They called themselves the first imported light beer in the US (and one of the few on this list not brewed by Anheuser Bush or Miller/Coors). brewed by Heinekin

6. Miller Genuine Draft 52% drop. "the fresh taste of draft beer in a bottle". I was a tad surprised to see this one on the list, given the heavy marketing.

5. Old Milwaukee 53% drop. I remember these in college, always one of the cheapest beers on the shelf, and it tasted like it... :chuckle:

4. Milwaukee's Best 57% drop "Brewed for a man's taste", I'm guessing for that man likes to drink urine. (j/k)

3.Bud Select 61% drop. "Dinstinctive Full Flavor", Sounds like Select put the "stink" in distinctive.

2.Michelob Light 66% drop. Of course, one must wonder if A-B knew this would happen with Michelob Ultra, another very similar watery light beer.

and numero uno:

1. Michelob: 72% drop. I used to drink this stuff many many many moons ago. It wasn't a bad beer, just priced a little higher than it should have been.

Thoughts?

Seems pretty spot on to me. I remember Milwaukee's best used to advertise heavily with the world series of p0ker. I hardly ever see it on the shelves... no one carries it.
Miller High Life is a bit of a surprise. It's actually not bad (in bottle form) and is INCREDIBLY cheap. The only thing I can think of is if they sold a ton way back when, and still sell a ton, just not as much.
Amstel light- yeah, they stopped advertising as far as I can tell... its expensive, and not that great.

Bud select- used to be a tasteful light beer. Now there's a lot of competition (even within AB), and they don't advertise.

And Michelob- again, I never see that stuff on the shelves or on a menu.

I used to drink a lot of Bud Select because I'd always get it at baseball games. I preferred the taste to Budweiser and Bud Light.

Never tried Michelob.

I drink a lot more Stella these days. They say its an old man's beer. I'm losing my hair so it's acceptable.

Article should have been titled: ATTENTION HIPSTERS! What to Drink Now That PBR is Mainstream!

I haven't touched a single one of those beers since I started college... many of them I haven't even wanted to taste for fear of drinking urine in a poser beer can.
